Sensible 5 seater for the wife - £10k

My wife would like a new car, here's the criteria

Max £10k
Hatchback
Modern infotainment- Bluetooth, Proper screen
5 seater
Automatic
Economical - 60 mpg+ ideally
Low tax
Low insurance
Parking sensors (appreciate its spec item)

Must be a 'proper car' in her words, basically she doesn't want an tiny car e.g. VW Up, Yaris, 107 etc.

Current top contender is a Merc A180d, which is right at the top of budget but appears to tick all boxes

Any suggestions??

It can be petrol, diesel or hybrid just as long as its Economical

If she likes the A Class then get her the A Class that's not an A Class & get an Infiniti Q30 they're exactly the same car but the Infiniti has the sightly nicer interior:

Golf GTD nice looking car lots of kit

The auto side of things hampers MPG a lot especially at that price point. The 2.0 TDI with auto…nah.

I recently bought one from an ex-employer - they'd been using a few of them to keep the travellers from using the car park over lockdown.

A genuine 58 mpg combined. 0 VED. Spacious/comfortable.

Toyota Auris Hybrid.

Forget diesel if you're anywhere near, or likely to be near, a ULEZ. You won't get many Euro 6 diesels for £10k unless it's a bit sheddy. So it's with that in mind that I suggest the Auris Hybrid, or maybe the Prius, or Honda Insight. Maybe Lexus CT200h.

And for a completely left field suggestion, Suzuki Baleno Hybrid:

Your wife doesn't do enough miles to warrant a diesel. You won't get as much benefit in terms of fuel saving/mpg and you are more likely to run into problems with reliability.

Get a Lexus CT200h, they have lovely interiors and are cheap as hell to run.

Thanks all, some decent suggestions there.

Many of then won't cut it in the looks department.

Is diesel that bad? My main concern is value in 5 years time so that is a factor.

The Lexus Ct200 and Auris hybrids look great options

The rule of thumb has always been to reduce its value by 23% ish year on year
So £10k
Then next year it’s £7.7k
Then next year it’s £5.9k
Then next year it’s £4.6k
Then next year it’s £3.5k
Then end of year 5 it’s £2.7k.

Now any other rules or regulations or fuel costs or VED changes or ULEZ might impact it further or cost of living and permanent reduction in peoples lifestyles then cheap cars like these may hold a bit more.

it might change again, but its not like that at the moment, car I paid £9.5k for last June, that I've put 10k miles in is worth a grand more

That would be ideal but all the options I find in that price range she says are not 'proper' cars e.g. Yaris, 107.

My only comment would be that your wife isn't doing enough mileage for fuel economy to be overly important - 60MPG vs 40MPG at 6k miles is only ~£300 difference per year. Diesel is a bit of a no-go at that mileage, unless it's made up entirely of monthly 500mile round trips.
