Warning - Cycling content!

For reasons only known the Google, I get a "Near Miss of the Day" on my feed all the time...

...So, clearly the algorithms work, as I clicked on it this morning, and saw this:

https://road.cc/content/news/nmotd-782-no-action-t...

Having seen the cyclist fall into a ditch as they couldn't unclip (right here), I'm at a total loss as to why this is an issue? Sure, I know the new highway code requires a 30 nautical mile gap between all road users, but;

Cyclist is in cycle lane.

Car in car lane.

Cars go by.

Red car bad as in car lane whilst cyclist in cycle lane.

The other cars behind the red car seem to as close as the red one, but not singled out...

I'll don my armoured vest now and prepare to be educated the PH way of "just keep yelling at someone until you're right" wink

I get your idea of each being in their own lanes but let’s look at it a different way.

Let’s say you were to stand on a train platform at a station close to the yellow line but not over it.

Wait till a fast train goes past ( one that doesn’t stop at the station) and see how you feel.

The train in on its track so shouldn’t bother you behind you as your behind the yellow line, right.

Just to be clear. DONT DO THE ABOVE. The air from the train going past will try pull you towards the train.

That’s just what it can feel like on a bike.

Just give them room and get on with life.

Key is a white line and non-segregated bike lanes give no protection whatsoever. Cameras like that tend to make gaps look bigger than they are and any vehicle close on a bike, especially when not anticipating it, are a shock.

If that were me cycling I'd probably have wondered why the driver didn't give me more space (they absolutely should have) but not sure I'd be rattling off number plates and reporting it - but then I'm confident on a bike and accept that people are dheads.

It shows you how well Google really knows you as it thinks you'll enjoy seeing cyclists in potential danger, having accidents or just being squashed.

And soon you'll be getting adverts for cycling insurance, then medical insurance followed up with no-win/no-fee solicitors specialising in cycling accidents.

Time to worry is when it is life insurance and funeral director adverts.

Given that the cyclist seemed fully prepared and was so frightened he had his left hand off the handle bar ready to press his silly little horn as soon as the car was along side, I really honestly feel that he's simply not got enough to worry about. Shouting the registration number for his GoPro in phonetics like a Super Army Soldier probably reinforces my view.

That's not to say I support elbow-buzzing cyclists, nor that I don't agree with often valid complaints. This guy though is just working really hard at reducing the general public's opinion of road cyclists. I've seen more convincing performances from premier league footballers rolling about the ground screaming because their hair got bent.

That doesn't really apply here though, with a speed differential of approx 10mph between bicycle and car. Also because a thousand tonnes of 15 foot tall train creates a very different effect on the air around it (constrained by the station and platforms) to a tonne of shopping car (in free air).

If I were driving the red car I'd have been nearer the crown of the road, but I don't think the red car was particularly close... If the road were narrower and that HAD been the crown of the road I wouldn't have expected the driver to sit back and wait to use the other side.

If I were riding the bike I'd have been a little closer to the kerb too. Plenty of space before getting to the gratings there.

I'm a cyclist and I get annoyed when cars pass too close. This didn't seem to warrant any action. I would not have even remembered it in 20 secs.

BUT...

In this case, it's just a cyclist being a dick.
(Drivers and pedestrians can be dicks as well).

As some wider context, I cycle to the train station a lot, with no cycle lanes so used to being "buzzed" by cars... On a related note, the only cyclists I now see are largely in the full jersey, lycra and cycling cleats, rarely someone just "out for a cycle", or "I think I'll take the bike to the shops today". I feel left out in jeans and a tee-shirt!

For the train analogy, I get it, but cycling on the roads it's not a new thing right?

Maybe Google is trying to turn me into a GoPro militant?? Or just the fact I bought a new bike over a year ago wink

I'll keep an eye out for the vitamins ads! They may save my life!!

I should have said that I wasn’t talking about this point in the original video - more the bike lanes in general.

Yes there is a difference between a train and a car. But as a cyclist you don’t always watch behind you as the roads are full or pot holes, grates and other hazards in front and it isn’t always possible to look behind. You don’t know wether it’s little Doris off to the shops in her little Micra, or big Dave flying down the road from the Quarry in his giant tipper truck full of stone.

And to be honest, I would wanna be his by either - 10mph difference or not. Chances are you are still gonna end up under the wheels.

Just comes across as a DCW, someone with an agenda to push and another self appointed road captain.

I am glad Google Mail hasn't thought to send me such content.

No further action taken says it all and everything we need to know about the cyclist.

Having watched a few of those "near miss of the day" videos it seems there is inconsistency between police forces in taking action against drivers.

For what it's worth, this one doesn't seem particularly bad. But there are a number of videos with some shocking driving that went without any action.

Looks pretty low grade as close passes go, based on the video, wasnt there so cant really say 100 percent but look a bit of a non event.

Car going a little bit quick maybe ?

I think the cyclist has had a load of close passes in the past so got fully set up with cameras and a horn, gets something marginal and bigs it up, bit like DCWs charging at situations looking for a good video/sympathy vote.

Didn't look to be 1.5 metres of space.....the cyclist has every right to complain. It really isn't hard, give vulnerable road users space. If you can't then you shouldn't be driving.
