How lazy are we getting!!!

Walking around my local area (200m radius) I now know 3 people who have a mobile car cleaning company come at least once a week.

What happened to doing it yourself or if you can’t be bothered getting your kids or neighbours kids to do it for pocket money!!!!

When I was younger I never wanted to be this guy but……
I’m mid 30s now and…….Back in my day my dad would say “want to earn a £5?”

Maybe they don't enjoy doing it themselves, like having it done properly by someone that does it day in and day out, maybe they can afford it, or all of the above?

Because they would rather sit on their 'arrises watching CelebrityXLoveIslandFutbal making their 'arrises even bigger. Now their 'arrises are so big they can barely move. biggrin

I'm quite proud of the fact that I watch zero TV and would rather spend my time tinkering or cleaning my cars.

While I don’t agree with it, I also don’t employ a window cleaner or gardener. I don’t mind people do pay these people. It’s supporting local people to provide a service.

It helps the economy, and the man in van probably does a better job than these people anyway.

this ^^ I normally get my cars done because:

my attempts at cleaning result in streakiness
my attempts at cleaning result in smudged windows
CBA/lazy
it's boring (I know some friends claim it's relaxing eek )
it doesn't get done every week/month so is (relatively) affordable

I use one such service to give the cars a good clean inside and out every month or so. I also pay someone to clean the windows, and deliver the unfathomable quantity of groceries my wife says we need each week . All these things can be done myself but I'm happy to pay a few quid so I don't have to, and free up my weekends when I'd otherwise do this stuff, to play with the kids, play table tennis, do whatever. Laziness has nothing to do with it. It's just the way I'd rather spend my time.

People have been paying people to wash cars since the dawn of the automobile. It really is nothing new. I love detailing my cars - I admit to being obsessive sometimes. I’d happily pay someone good money to do mine if I knew they were good. It’s not about laziness, these car owners may simply be busy.

Look on the bright side: they care about their cars enough to have them cleaned. I’ve seen owners on my road turn up with a new car only for it to be trashed months later - dangling door mirrors, scratches all over it. So many people treat cars like white goods these days (which says a lot for how they drive and treat other people’s cars too) I’m pleased when I see car owners appreciating their vehicles.

Some car owners like to take good care of their car. Driving it through the car wash machine or setting kids loose with sponges isn't going to keep the car in top condition.

A lot of jobs wouldn't exist if people just done everything themselves. I'm sure most people use paid services that they could do themselves.

You’d hate me. Take it to the car wash once a month on a Saturday when they do it for half price.

I’m happy to take my family workhorse to the cheapo car wash every so often. I just try not to wince when they drop the sponge, pick it up again and carry on scrubbing the car. It’s why I prefer to wash my P&Js myself.

If you have the equipment and space, why not just occasionally wash the family workhorse yourself too?
If you're not too bothered about doing the job perfectly, I reckon it's possible to hose a car down, quickly wash over with a sponge/wash mitt and hose down again in 10 minutes. It takes easily that long to drive to the local hand car scratching company, let them run gritty sponges over the car and spray the wheels with brick acid, then drive back again.

Well for me I use a jet wash at BP/SHELL etc. Do it myself. Living in flats means I have no easy access to an outside tap.

I do it once a week or every other week even though it’s a shed. Takes around 10-15 mins and that includes checking car over. Check tyres fully, check brakes properly, look for any leaks that should be there, all fluids etc etc.
I don’t bother with inside as I have a 4 year old and 2 year old who seem to destroy everything. Make sure my side is clean and that’s it.

I do give it a good wash from time to time but after washing one of my weekend cars I don’t have much energy to do a second. Also, the workhorse is covered in dings and scratches due to vandalism, bikes bashing into it etc. I’m not that precious about it.

Are the people providing a "kids with a bucket hanging off their bike handlebars" level of service, or more like an actual detailer offering?

Somewhere between the two. We had some people come to my old office that did just a fine job. Not outstanding, but better than most of my former colleagues would do themselves.

I looked up one and it’s minimum £10 to come out. That’s just for a jet wash.
