Insurance for 1991 500SL for 22 year old
Discussion
Hi folks, I am 50, have an old Merc SL and would like to add my son onto an insurance policy so we can share the driving on a summer trip. Our current insurers ClassicLine, who are excellent sadly have a 25+ policy. Does anyone have experience of other providers? He has a full clean licence, 2 years NCD on his own car, thanks in advance! Stewart
I think you might struggle to find classic insurance for a Merc 500SL that new that will accept an under 25 person on the policy.
My good mate has a 21 year old son, who even has his own classic car and classic policy (Triumph Herald) but he still can't become a named driver on the policy of his Dad's 1947 Plymouth, as no classic insurance company they have tried would accept an under 25.

Try putting his and your details into a comparison website like Confused and see which companies quote. I have a boxster and I could find companies to have both of us, but it increased my premium From 200 to 600. Still not bad but I decided against it.
Try also VEYGO for temporary cover for him to be added as and when needed.

When I was looking round for car insurance for a 25 year old car I'd bought, I was curious that the lowest quotes appeared to be the same with either 1 years NCD or 7. It turned out they were classic car brokers who now appear on the comparison sites! Quotelinedirect, Adrian Flux and Lancaster were 3.
I don't think Footman James do, but they will provide an online quote nowadays on their own website. Classic car insurance used to be so bespoke that a direct company quote was the only way, but not any more.

Sorry for the late reply, thank you all for your help, much appreciated.
For now I can add him to my admiral policy on a different car (a newer sl350) for about 200 quid for a month, including eu travel so that is my preference for now
This was going to be my suggestion, I used to get insured on my Dads W124 Mercedes Cabriolet when I was 20 doing the exact same thing (11 years ago, mind..)For now I can add him to my admiral policy on a different car (a newer sl350) for about 200 quid for a month, including eu travel so that is my preference for now
