Why do they feel slow?

I'm at a loss here. Yesterday a friend of mine gave me a ride in the Tesla people carrier thing. It has a 0-60 of 3.1 seconds and 450/500hp. There is no doubt at how fast these cars are, I have seen them at Santa Pod and on the internet.
However, the whole acceleration experience was so different that the car didn't feel fast at all. I did remark at how quickly the numbers were rising on the speedo, and that was impressive, but I dd that whilst he was accelerating and i was looking at him chatting away.
How have Tesla made a car so refined you don't notice the supercar performance?

Went from 120d to iD3 and it doesn't seem slow to me - nearly identical levels of lower speed performance and it feels the same albeit without the engine noise (a good thing from me)
However never been in a "fast" car to enjoy the engine noise or appreciate the performance.
for 3/4 of the population (but 1/4 of PH) it's barely noticeable.

I’m surprised by this as I’ve driven and travelled in many ridiculous road and track cars and the Tesla was more ridiculous than nearly all of them bar a single seater track car. I think the difference is the Tesla makes it very easy to put the power down with little drama but the other cars squirm and punish you for getting it wrong. Otherwise the acceleration feeling was just the same or even better in most cases with the Tesla. I’m used to some extremely fast custom built track cars that can get to 100 as quick as the Tesla can to 60 but even my first ride in an M3P made me involuntarily swear in surprise. The way it can switch the power on like it’s an on or off switch really catches you out, it doesn’t build or require controlling as much as normal cars.

I laugh at posts like this because you think you will have a choice. You’ll be in an EV one day in the not too distant future. Almost everyone bar some very rich collectors will. The laws and taxes coming will severely restrict ICE and make it very prohibitively expensive. Fuel stations will close down and become more sparse too. Wrong ones outnumber the right one probably 25 to 1 or more.

Off launch in a model s as a passenger it felt a little like a plane taking off, relentless yet smooth power. And the sparse white interior added to the airplane effect..
They're just not particularly 'hardcore' cars. Sit down in the cockpit of a Taycan and the experience is quite different. It's still smooth but feels more alive, more Porsche.
Or an SUV like mine, the mind boggles as to how anything so big and heavy can take off like a supercar and not fall over going around a corner.

Maybe, but I think you are over-egging it though. The choice will no doubt come at considerable expense, but it's still a choice, especially if you aren't trying to cover too many miles each year.
Cheap, high-mileage ICE motoring will become (is already becoming) a thing of the past.

I've tracked bikes for a number of years. Even after getting off the two wheeled rocket, any of my performance cars still felt performanced. (new word Edited by delta0 on Wednesday 15th June 13:42

The most powerful car I've ever driven was some sort of Tesla with 760bhp-odd. It didn't feel anywhere near as quick as it should have done. Perhaps it was the lack of noise/drama or just the sheer weight of the thing, but I've driven stuff with half the power that felt punchier.

Go and try doing a full bore WOT launch in any Tesla on the most bumpy/cambered B road you can think off in the middle of Jan.......The biggest 'drama' you get is the traction control light coming on. Our Tesla makes going from A to B in virtually any road condition so effortless, getting close to 3 digits in a near 3 tons SUV on a B road really shouldn't feel 'comfortable/easy', so these days I take the pedal bike out for 'drama'. ) I was really hoping to feel savage acceleration, instead I didn't. Personally am fine with that, but if you want to be 'scared' by the car, a Tesla isn't something you should get........a Twizzy on the otherhands feels scary to even sit in when stationary!

The person that best feels the power of a Tesla MS P at launch is the poor sod that's pulled up next to it in their £300k supercar ) I was really hoping to feel savage acceleration, instead I didn't.
