B58 + Dog?

Hi all,

I’ve wanted a dog for as long I can remember, so now we’re moved out and settled we’ve put a deposit down on a lovely golden retriever pup.

Once my Honda woes are sorted, I’m looking to get a BMW F31 touring to do both the daily and dog duties. This will either be a 340i or a 330d (not interested in the 320i, think the engine is a bit meh).

I know how good the B58 in the 340i can sound, so a res delete would be inevitable. So my question is, do you think this would bother the dog sat in the boot? It can crackle/burble/pop as I’m sure some of you are aware. Anyone else had a noisy car with a dog in the boot? RS4 Avant, C63 touring etc. How did they fare?

I’m a proper car guy but the doggo’s comfort is paramount to me. I know how scared they can be of fireworks etc, although they’ll be no crappy pop and bang maps here. I’d still be just fine with the 330d.

My dogs have never complained or said anything about travelling in my loud cars.

So long as you don't make it do the whole rice crispy thing (sounds ridiculous anyway) I'm sure you'll be fine.

As you have pointed out, there are louder estate cars out there.

Dogs also love speed. So get the 40i.

Iv got an m140 with the msport exhaust, standard no downpipes/res deletes etc and it’s a bit loud in the boot my French bulldog hates being in there tries to climb out over the seats but she will happily sit on the back/ front seat in her car seat bed thing no problem, the only reason I can think of is the noise as she was fine in the boot of my previous 325d estate.

My labrador loves fireworks but hates being in any car.

Get a 340i with MPPSK. You only really get the fireworks in Sport/Sport +, so when you've got the mutt, leave it in Comfort.

I have the 240i witch has the B58 engine and this is the answer, they are very quiet in comfort mode so will be fine for the dog

I thought you would have learned your lesson by now modifying cars given what happened with your last car! Just leave it stock, no res deletes, no remaps!

I wouldn't expect this to be a problem. I've had numerous labradors, all trained as gun dogs and quickly got used to the sound of shotguns and rifles firing. If you drop a piece of cutlery in the kitchen she'll jump out of her skin, run and hide - Which just reinforces my belief that it's about how the dog is trained and introduced to sounds/experiences that could be scary if not handled well.

I have dog + 340i touring. With original exhaust zero issues; it now has MPPSK on it, in 'comfort' there's a little bit more noise but no pos/crackles/bangs - zero issues. If I cared to thrap it around in sport making pops and bangs I strongly suspect he wouldn't much like it so I don't. Zero issues.

Over the years have had all our dogs ( mostly Labs but 1 Dalmatian ) in a variety of cars and never been aware that exhaust noise was an issue for them.
More likely car sickness could be so you need to get through that one.Obviously depends on each dog -some more anxious than others ie one of our Lab puppies wouldn't even walk past the Defender at first without shying away.

Thanks for all the replies so far, MPPSK might be the way to go. Can’t remember if the OEM backbox is valved or not either, been a while since I was under one.

I’m certainly leaving remaps alone that’s for sure
But a resonator delete doesn’t hurt anything or anyone

I've had lots of noisy cars and many dogs, sound of the car has never been an issue, main point from my experience is that the dogs are much happier when they can see where they are going. Travall make a good quality rear compartment gate (top of seat to ceiling) and divider and I use UK Custom Covers for the boot liner, not associated in any way with either company, just a happy BMW / Audi customer.
