The squeal on my gen 2 Vanquish is unbearable to the point of embarrassment when pulling up at the lights! I’m told by the dealer this is the norm but surely there can’t be hundreds of these cars going around like this?

History:

- Purchased in Feb from main dealer, noticed a squeal on test drive and was assured it was due to lack of use (car has done under 500m a year for 3 years) and they needed hard and heavy braking from speed, all would be done prior to collection.
- No squeal on collection until towards the end of the 150mi journey (after a clear run so not much braking done). Did some heavy braking from 70 down to 20 a few times, cured the issue but then only for a while.
- No squeal from cold for the first 20 mins or so of general around town use, then squeal starts with any braking.
- Took it to local main dealer to sort a few bits out under the timeless warranty including this issue. They said they found the handbrake was sticking so fixed that - replaced a pad for that I think (though said it was not what was causing this issue as it only happens when using the foot brake) and chamfered the pads and that all was sorted.
- Problem persists. It’s ridiculous amounts of screeching, again hard braking remedies it for a short while (maybe half an hour)
- Called dealer again who said it’s the norm, only hard braking resolves it and they wish these carbon ceramics were only saved for track cars as they get so many issues as most use is on normal roads and people complain about the screeching due to relatively light braking. I said I’d read that there are softer pads to remedy this but was advised they’re c £2k I think.

My opinion is that surely this can’t be the case and this forum and others would be full of people complaining about it if they were all like is. I pull up at a junction and sound like a rusty old banger.

What say ye pistonheads? Are all of you with AM CCBs hating it every time you press the brake pedal?

To be fair even their standard ones squeal at slow speeds quite a few vantage owners complain, but it even draws reference to it in the owners manual.

2017 V12VS with 35,000km

no squeal (ever)

gets mostly driven on longer fast drives but always has to come back into the v[city to get home

Jag F Type R - CCM brakes - no squeal, gets driven everywhere , everyday

sorry but they shouldn't do that, something is wrong with yours

DBS with 12k miles and Vanquish with 4K miles. Never a squeak/squeal from either of them. And I don’t use them particularly hard (or often). So I don’t ascribe to ‘they all do date’.

My 2011 Virage was pretty bad when I bought it but I have found that thoroughly jet washing the disks and calipers seems to get rid of it for a few weeks so I presume that it is brake pad dust build up.

I did a bit of googling to try and find a remedy and found it is quite common a lot of other cars with CCM brakes but you always seem to find some people are plagued with it and others have no issues at all.

I test drove a 2019 Jaguar F Type SVR recently and that was a lot worse than my Virage!

2014 Vantage V12VS. 21k miles. No braking noise ever.

I’ve never pressure washed the wheels/brakes. Just light soap and water mix, wheel brush and gentle rinse with a hose.

Could be something trapped between a pad and disk? Any visible damage to a disk? Definitely not normal.

Judging solely by this forum over the years, it does seem to be a very variable fault. Many must be lucky, whereas others are not, which I can appreciate from your experience, would be infuriating.

When I first had my Vantage (steel discs), there was some brake squeal.
I was told about the technique of two gentle stops, followed by a heavy stop.
That worked for me and there has never been any further squealing.
Presumably, there must have been a film of some kind, on the pads or discs.

Bamford Rose look after my car. If their location happens to be suitable for you, they might be able to resolve the issue.

Thank you for the replies so far. I’m not going completely mad then.

Just come back from a break in the Lake District and driving hard on some of the roads up there on my own, no problem, but a slow pootle to a restaurant with my wife in the evening and the brakes are making a horrible screech so it would lead me to think that it’s unlikely to be something trapped.

I think I’ll have to push this a bit harder with the main dealer. I still have the Timeless warranty and the issue was flagged pre purchase.

Edit to add. No visible damage - they look in good shape

The only time the brakes on my Vanquish 2 make a noise is moving out of the garage at slow speed. Other than that, they are fine.
I don't brake heavily as a rule, so that can't be an excuse for them squeeling in my opinion.

One thing I am aware of is not to clean the wheels/discs with any chemical type cleaner. That info' is in the handbook.

It’s build up of material between the pads and the discs. I rinse the discs thoroughly with water when I wash the car and it usually goes away for a while. It’s difficult to ensure water gets between the pads and discs particularly on the inside of the wheel so this approach may not always seem to work. I believe it is a good idea to leave everything to dry off before using the car again. But yes, it is annoying.

VANQUISH S here and no squeal at all ever from my CCM s
The only noise I ever hear is by putting it in first and letting it creep at about 5mph then gently brake and you can hear a faint whoosh sound which is apparently a good thing and Bamford look for this when checking bout CCM brakes.
That said I am aware that lots of cars across multiple manufacturers do suffer from squeal and grabbing with ccm brakes so it's not uncommon

Yep Loads of manufacturers have an issue.

JLR spent ages swapping pad Compounds and offered customers the "latest specs discs and pads"

AML have followed suit and Porsche has gone as far as making a video to educate customers.

It's total harmonics.

The thing is this was flagged on the AM Engineer’s report when prepping it for sale (shown to me when I went up for a test drive) as something that needed sorting so surely I have a case for it being sorted (however that may be)?

Its a feature not a fault.

I’d push them to sort it out, it’s not acceptable in my opinion to have to put up with it. I’ve owned my Vanquish 2 for 5 years, my brakes have never any squeaked ever, so they don’t all do it.

Good luck, hope you get it sorted.

In all my years I've never heard that or seen that posted anywhere? AM do lots of different sized CCB's so the chance of Vanquish 2 CCB's being the same as an american car, seems, well a tad unlikely.

Where did you read this exactly?

Unfortunately this is a common characteristic with COM brakes. Whilst hugely annoying, and embarassing, there is actually no fault with the brakes. New Discs and pads will almost certainly rectify it either for a while or maybe permanently, but at £12k+ for a full set, the dealer is unlikely to go this route.

As the squeal is high frequency vibrations, there are a few ways to try and eliminate it. Reface the pads on some abrasive paper to deglaze them, grease the pad pins and rattle clips, use a pad grease between the pads and pistons and chamfer the leading and trailing edges of the pads.

Do all the above at the same time and if that does not fix it, give up or replace them.
