Got a new 111R coming soon so I am doing some homework on exhausts. Currently I have the stage 2 booked, but notice the new Janspeed has claims of 10-12 BHP power improvements at the wheels.

Anyone know comparative ratings for all the exhausts (especially the stage 2) and the reality of such claims? Do any of them deliver noticable improvements and if so, any thoughts as to which one delivers the best (other than sound)?

You have managed to ask the Question that everyone has on their mind at least once whilst owning an Elise. Biggest problem is actually validating the manufacturers claims.
Going by Janspeeds published data, they do achieve 12bhp, but then others have claimed the same, only for people using rolling roads, to disput their claims entirely.

I am in pretty much the same situation as you. I want a different exhaust sytem, was pretty certain that I wanted the Lotus Stage 2, only for Janspeed to brng out their version. Having heard the Janspeed on an S2 111S, I need to hear it on a 111R now before I finally make up my mind.

Truth about 111R exhausts

The look small and gay.

sorry had to be said

As for what manufacturers claim it cannot be quoted becuase the have not stuck it on then put it on the rollers the have also mapped to suit so most of that power could come from the rempa not the actual exhaust

If you are buying a sports exhaust to improve power then you are buying one for the wrong reason.

I doubt any exhaust, other than a straight through race system, will give 10-12 bhp.

Dont for a second think you will pick up your car after having had a sports exhaust put on and think 'wow, there is so much more power!' because it wont happen.

They may give up to 5bhp more but if you can feel this increase in a car with 189 bhp to start with your better than me.

I noticed a slightly better pick up in revs and the engine felt a little bit smoother when I had my Stage 2 put on but the main issue is simply noise.

Choose an exhaust that you like the sound of because thats essentially the difference it makes to your car.

Have a look on PistonheadsTV. I have several video clips of my Exige with the Stage 2 on and Tony Hetherington has some of comparisons of his S2 111S with the standard system and then with the Larini on. As above Fish seems very pleased with his Quicksilver.

Try and listen to as many as possible and pick the one you like the sound of most. Power improvement wise there is nothing in it IMO.

Edited to ask how the hell can you have only posted twice in 58 months?

on its own an exaust wont do much but used in conjunction with other mods like induction you can certainly get a increase in power that you can notice but its usually small, the best improvents that come from an exhaust are usally to be had by changing the whole system including manifold, i dont think theres a 4 2 1 system available for the 111r yet but i'm sure there will be soon enough a good 4 2 1 manifold upgrade with a good exaust & a good induction kit should give you another 10 bhp ot there abouts and should also give much better mid range torque and that is what you will probably notice the most more mid range punch

Peter agreed.

I have the ITG & Stage 2 and think the car is probably about 200 bhp. I havent had this checked and cant be bothered as I am not that interested as long as it goes well and sounds good.

The car had the ITG on when I got it and I put the Stage 2 on afterwards so didnt notice any big differences, although combined they undoubtably help.

James here:

I have an ITG and a Quicksilver there is a noticable improvement in low down torque and rev pick up. The best thing as Davey has said is the noise and overrun pops. It totaly changes the car and is ten times better than the standard. I wouldn't bother with the Stage 1 it's too quite unless you want to do loads of trackdays. If so I have one going cheap.

I would gues I am putting out something like 200-205 a la Davey.

At the time Janspeed released their Exhaust for the 111R, they also released a 4-2-1 Manifold and Sports Cat, just in case anyone wanted to know.

Having said that, after a brief discussion with someone else who also posts here, Janspeed used to have a poor image as far a build quality was concerned. No idea if its still a valid image.

Quicksilver seems to be getting a few votes, how much are they ??

Quicksilver is availiable from Hanger 111. Although I haven't personally seen a Janspeed 4 2 1 for the 11r I have heard the quality is not quite there.

Thanks for all the input and advice... I have decided to simply go for the stage 2 at this time - for the money and convenience it will deliver what I'm looking for. I'll certainly go take a look at induction systems next though.

I chatted with Quicksilver and PTP (about the Janspeed) both were very responsive and PTP went a step further by giving me some rolling road figures for an S2 Exige with different systems. Peak power comparison was:

STD gave 191.40 BHP @ 8000 RPM
OEM STAGE 2 SILENCER gave 194.04 BHP @ 7500 RPM
JANSPEED SILENCER gave 203.28 BHP @ 7500 RPM
JANSPEED FULL SYSTEM gave 201.96 BHP @ 7500 RPM

I also went up to the factory to see my new car yesterday and got to see the new circuit car doing some laps of the track in preparation for it's first public outing this weekend... Looked good and sounded fantastic. Shame I couldn't get a closer look.

Oh, the 58 weeks and 2 posts... I guess I like reading lots ;-) But with new car comes new questions... I'm soon to be on my 3rd Lotus...
