I'll probably get stoned to death for this, but I detest the fake engine noises that BMW pumps through the stereo.

I've seen on some BMWs than you can switch this off via the infotainment system.

Does anyone know if this is the case with the current Z4?

I’d imagine you can via Carly / Ista etc.

I know that using the above you were able to turn it down / off on my M140i.

I use Bimmercode (from App Store) and a £14 ODB dongle from amazon and can do a few things, one of which is to turn off active sound, very simple and takes about 2 mins.

Awesome - thanks.

What does it sound like with the active sound disabled?

Quiet I’d bet, based on my experience with my 340i. I got someone (PCW Exhausts near Bedford) to straight-through the back box and the resonator which has made it a bit more vocal, but not anti-social.
