Replacing starter motor

Judging from the smoke when trying to start the car on Sunday and lack of action from the starter, I have a feeling that either the starter or solenoid has packed in. Had the hot start problem intermittantly for a year or so now, so I'm not suprised it has finally gone.

I was planning on taking them off myself to see what the damage is. Is it an easy job getting the starter off. Anything I should know before embarking on the job?

Firstly:- Disconnect the battery...

After that its a case of having a long enough extension with an allen header socket to get at the upper mounting bolt. Not taken one off myself, but it looks difficult to get at unless you can reach through the wheel arch. You will need the car on stands and probably need the front offside wheel off.

Here you go:

Remove Starter

It's simple enough with the right tools and enough clearance under the car. You will probably need a decent sized bar to start the nuts, if you have a torque wrench this can be used.

I'd invest in a heat jacket for the new one when you put it back.

Have a look on Ebay for car ramps, I got mine from there for a fiver.

Doddle of a job if you can borrow a ramp takes all the grief out of it.

Slightly off post but has anyone founds ramps that are wide enough to take the rear wheels? Mine over hang by an inch at least each side.

Due to the problems of getting the car onto standard ramps without damaging the body work, I resorted to building a set of ramps out of 1/2" ply, with a long low angle ramp onto a flat section, hinged in to middle to make then easily transportable. Should have made them higher though.

Had no problems with standard ramps here, front or back. Straight up and down. Does yours have skirts on?

Might be an idea to add a heat shield at the same time to help cure the hot start problem - Think Modwise used to do them but not sure where else to get one.
