No, not 'dream cars', I mean when you are asleep and dreaming about cars and driving.

I don't often dream about driving, but when I do there is one common denominator - the brakes never work properly. I need to really push down on them and they always lack stopping power, even to the point of me needing to pull the handbrake. The car eventually slows to a walking pace, but still will never quite stop.

I'm sure there is some deep-rooted psychological reason. There is no fear, but I don't understand why the brakes never work.

Strangely, when I dream about bikes I am a wheelie god and can keep it on the back-wheel all day, and ride trials without any effort, unlike in real life where my balance is pretty poor.

I'm sure Freud would have a field day, cool story etc...

I dream a lot about cars and trucks but never motorbikes, even though I am a biker.
I live in a country that drives on the right, and I drive regularly here, but in my dreams I usually am in a RHD car but sometimes I drive on the right!
The brakes thing is very common but also so is having no power.

A dream I have often, is where I am driving a car, and either a) I'm drunk, and I know I'm drunk and see police stopping cars ahead of me, or, more often, b) I am reversing the car, but far too quickly, and I know I can't control it, but I do it anyway.

Both of these happen too often (in my dreams) for my liking!

Sleep enables the brain to re-set. Your brain operates by means of synapsis (switches, if you like) connecting trillions of times throughout the day. Some of these stick and require a re-set. Doing this whilst awake is akin to servicing your car whilst it's driving along. So our brains send us to sleep whilst it sorts itself out.

Dreaming is the brain testing that the work was successful. It does this by drawing from you memories to contrive a situation to play out to see if the right parts of the brain react in the way they should. If you're into cars, then it stands to reason that your memory will be full of cars. But that alone is insufficient to test anything so your brain introduces an an additional scenario. You may have seen a film where the brakes didn't work so it latches on to that and adds that into the dream you experience.

So, there's some psychology at play but only in relation to the memories and things you've experienced rather than some character based observation about you never 'knowing when to stop'.

My car involvement in dreams always seems to revolve around them either not being where I left them/damaged/stolen. Not entirely sure why but it may be some deep seated insecurity about it.

It's quite rare that I remember my dreams, and (possibly since I don't remember) rarer that I dream about cars. The only one I remember, I was driving my car in the Alps, and understeered off a cliff. I remember the fall up to the moment of impact too, bracing for it (however little use that would have been), etc.

Guilty.. bikes and cars, often 90s cars, bikes from any period.
Often a lot of technical detail, rather than anything exotic it tends to be slightly weird and sometimes made up stuff. The most recent I can remember was some kind of thema/delta cross, boxy 2 door coupe/saloon, might have been a V8 or a v6 turbo. Prior to that was some kind of Calibra with AWD and some kind of "aero" alloys, I think it was a cross between a turbo and the early 8v ones with the low Cd, made a thread for that a while back.
Have also dreamt of riding (and wheely-ing) a super Duke and one with something like a jelly mould cbr600 but it had strakes on the side like a Testarossa. Might have been some sort of dream warped Ducati passo, it was red.

All very sad and geeky nerd

Yep, mine are usually that I have my dream car but either: a) I can't fit in it - it is about 60% scale of the real thing, or b) I can fit in it and everything is amazing but I put my foot down and it is absolutely gutless, like a 1.0l Micra would be.

Weird stuff, probably some meaning in there that some quack would like to use as a reason why I should call my Mum more often.

Often dream of Dad getting new cars, stuff he'd never get in reality. He drives a Swift and I dream he's bought an S63 AMG or borrowed a Bentley and I try to drive it and it goes into limp mode so I can't see what's it like.

My dreams I tend to remember and they get "broken" during the next day. So I dream about coming up to a junction to turn left known for poor visibility from the right only to be smashed into by a stolen car who drives off and they never find. Next day I drove to said junction, then paused for a second, only to see an Audi A3 flying round the bend. Not saying it's premonition but funny when it does happen. I have dreams about an old group of friends I've lost touch with. Then I end up bumping into them or people from back in those days in the supermarket, having not seen of even thought about them for years.

Mustang Mach 1 pops up at lot... must go back to my childhood days & James Bond.
In it, I can’t / don’t stop for anything & basically just steer.
I’ll end up getting lost & getting frustrated trying to retrace the route.
Another one... just parked on a hillside or cliff with the headlights on.
If that’s not bad enough... sometimes I forget to get dressed. yikes

So literally ‘Naked & Afraid’.

Quite often dream that I am reversing quite quickly, then apply the brakes but the car just won't slow down as I head towards another parked car or wall.

Foot absolutely full force on the break pedal and the damn thing only gradually slows down - but no where near enough. Stressful!

You don't need to be Freud to interpret the fact that I often dream about driving a car that appears to have far less power than expected.

A more road dream is that I am often driving somewhere and the road becomes narrower and more constricted to the point where I realise I'm walking, and usually with great care.

I have some pretty good dreams, often really vivid and seem to last for hours and the next morning when I wake up I can remember everything like I've watched a film with me starring in it.

Coincidentally enough, the night before last I had a dream about a Mclaren, one of the new ones, 650, 720 whatever, but one of my best mates had just bought one, we went on a joyride, but he tried to slow down for a tight corner and went off the road and skidded over some grass, down into a shallow river completely out of control, we managed to escape unhurt and then we were really worrying about how to stop the car getting completely ruined. I remember that feeling of skidding and being out of control like it lasted for minutes rather than a few seconds. Typical 'out of control' dream I guess.

The car that always turns up in my dreams is my first one - I’ve a picture of it on my desk right now, but it’s always in my dreams. Had it from 86-90, lived in France with it, took it all over Europe. I think it represents my long list youth or something? Always that car. Sometimes I buy it back. It’s impossible, as the chap I sold it to got it stolen.

While I’m on about dreams - guns! For some reason the trigger will never pull, the tendons on the inside of my forearm just hurt, the trigger finger won’t pull. Every time. What’s all that about? confused

Non-functioning guns... I refer you to my "hardly takes Sigmund Freud" allusions above. hehe

OMG I have this exact same experience. Seriously!

It's an awful sickening helpless feeling when the car is heading slowly towards a cliff edge, or group of people, and you can't stop it.

We have the exact same dreams. I'm a bit better on a bike though.

I would like to know what Freud would think of this too. I have the same dream, pushing down with all my power on the break, but car wont stop fully. I think there's definitely something wrong with us......

I had a weird one last night - I had a dream I sold my Discovery and bought a Range Rover Sport. The dash on the RRS went blank and displayed a message "AEC gas low" (Christ knows what that is!). The message couldn't be hidden or acknowledged and removed. I ended up visiting a dealer and being quoted £2000! Apparently AEC gas was required for all the systems in the car to function. Long story short I ended up getting it fixed, then driving along telling my wife how much I missed my Discovery.

A recurring one is of my old Triumph where I dream I've still got it. Those ones generally feel "real" as well.
