My helmet smells

Can you remove the lining and/or pads?
If so, handwashing in lukewarm water with baby shampoo has always been recommended and works very well. I always give them a good squeeze (repeatedly) and when I'm satisfied that they're clean, I then squeeze and rinse them in cold, clean water. Leave to air dry. Jobs a good'un.
If not removable, I believe that helmet sanitisers are available, which is a foam that extracts sweat particle in situ followed by a wipe with a damp microfibre.

But there’s no mystery to the inside of a helmet, it’s basically soft foam and fabric padding and polystyrene, so all will handle getting a good soaking!
Oh and if you wear leathers, do the same with them, try not to get the leather too wet, but a good wash especially around the old chap! My mate ( passed on now sadly) about 30 years ago got a terrible impertigo infection from his leathers as he roadie all year round and never cleaned them! Honestly, it lasted 18 months and left him pretty scarred up! Nasty stuff these bugs and bacteria in biker kit

I would be cautious in washing/wetting leathers without firstly allowing them to dry off naturally and secondly not feeding them afterwards. Washing will strip the oils require to keep them supple. The lining is non removable, so will look into sanitizer, and will just give it a gentle wash for now.
I wear textiles, and find turning them inside out, a mild febrezze solution on the liner, and hanging them outside for a few hours makes them fresh again.

may i suggest febreeze?
