How is this allowed without consultation or plans in place (which in fairness may be being prepared, but in equal fairness to the council involved and their past history will probably result in zilch).

My remaining elderly relative has her pleasure of wandering from her road adjacent to the South of the Ship Canal over to the Morrisons on the North side for her lunch and a chat in the cafe with friends then buys herself whatever fresh food she need to cook herself Mary Berrys' latest offering for tea. With this bridge shut, the diversions east or west are at least 1 1/2 miles each way compared to 400 years direct (which she reckons takes her 15 minutes each way).

Presume engage with local Councillors is step 1?

Just realised how unPistonheads this is. Aunt Val walks...............is there a better subthread or forum? (Though this is part the point, come from a couple miles away in a vehicle you just drive the avoiding routes

I love the way the Ship Canal crossings were laid down in law forever, including the barely used small "ferry" crossings! At least you have been given a year's notice to make plans.

Mind you, how heavily used is the canal these days? Can't the army build a pontoon bridge across it during the repair of the swing bridge and dismantle it to let the one ship through that needs to pass during that time (ducks).

Worth watching this chap if you haven't seen him before, his account of the ship canal crossings is brilliant:

Sounds like the ideal time for Aunt Val to embrace a mobility scooter or online food deliveries.

i'm kind of local to this - i commute over the other swing bridge on Chester Road and didn't know this was being planned.

I agree OP a nightmare for walkers to get to morrisons from Stockton Heath now with a big diversion necessary and will cause a constant traffic nightmare during peak times those three bridges are very heavily used and a constant bottle neck.

Sucks, but if it needs refurbishing then there's not much to consult anyone about - it's gotta happen.
I can't see them laying much in the way of alternative transport on, it's just one of those things.

There are 3 swing bridges with 2 kilometres of each other on that canal, they open on average once per day but ive seen them being opened 3 times on one day at times.

Indeed it was only last week in the hot weather one of them got stuck open - but this isn't a new thing and happens every summer.

Ta for the replies.

I'm thinking perhaps a Trebuchet and large trampolines as the receivers to throw pedestrians over the canal!

It does seem strange there was a brief period of publicity about this then all quiet............think the ball is now in the Councils hands as to what to plan.

Generally at the moment there only seem to be up to three boats a day down the canal. I remember the 1970s when the boats were rushing to get to Trafford to get unloaded on Friday it seemed the bridge was open all morning (good excuse for being late to school)..........

Interesting (or not) traffic fact. The traffic levels over the A49 swing bridge in 2018 (in terms of number of vehicles) were higher than that for the original design of the M6 Thellwall viaduct!

Sounds like you are looking at a business oppurtunity.

How bizarre, just clocked this...she is indeed called Valerie! However she does go by her second name Catherine in day to day life! Is that just an internet guess that an old lady will be called Val?
