BMW M CEO teases 50th anniversary 'CSL'

The BMW birthday celebrations are just getting started!

And you thought the M3 Touring was something special. Fresh from being the featured brand at the weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, BMW M has continued the 50th birthday party with a new concept car. It’s been revealed, interestingly, on M CEO Franciscus van Meel’s Instagram, and appears to be a homage to the 1973 3.0 CSL, the very first M car. Which would be fitting.

Of course, this isn’t the first time BMW has hinted at such a creation. There have been ‘Hommage’ concept cars stretching years, with both a 3.0 CSL Hommage and 3.0 CSL Hommage R shown within a few months of each other back in 2015. There’s been some desire and no little intent to celebrate the original, it seems - a 50th anniversary presents the perfect opportunity.

From what can be seen from the Insta post, this new CSL will be M4 based, because even the funky disguise can’t fully hide the fact it’s a pretty chunky monkey. But there’s plenty to be encouraged by, not least the smaller grilles up front, double rear spoiler (one roof, one boot) like the 1973 car and a little sticker that says ‘6MT FTW’.

Which, if we still understand acronyms, means this car will have a six-speed manual gearbox, the transmission choice conspicuously lacking from the M4 CSL - marvellous. A homage to the 3.0 CSL wouldn’t be right with anything but a manual, would it?

There’s more, too. Note how the rear arches are beefed up to almost meet the spoiler - again a nod to the 3.0 - and that the front end is broadened to match, with some real racer-style intakes. It’s incredibly low, too, right down to the height of van Meel’s Pumas, implying a bodykit just as dramatic up front as the double decker rear spoiler. Even if it comes out flat grey, this BMW promises to be attention grabbing. Hopefully, this time, for all the right reasons.

There’s no more concrete info for the moment, though ‘I like it rare’ on the comic book bonnet suggests there won’t be many of this 3.0 CSL Hommage. We’d bet on less than 1,000, as that’s the number of CSLs being produced. Might it be just 50, to mark the half century? Or might it be 500, because there’s 500hp mated to that six speed manual in this very, very intriguing CSL homage? We’ll keep you posted…

£500k+ apparently. Makes that £460k Subaru look a bit pricey.

that wrap reminds me of one of them fair ground rides with the Air brushed art, normally rip offs of famous people like Peter Andre, on the 'mysterious waltzers'

Looks fantastic. The revised front bumper looks great (will this be available on any other M3/M4s?)

I really hope that it's not going to €500k+ as rumoured!

At Goodwood the BMW //M stand consisted of a DJ doing a loud dance set all day with a couple of cars as the backdrop. This was loud enough to drown out the noise of the proper race cars going up the hill, and there was no historic or cool cars to view on the stand that I saw (other than an M1 up on the roof where you couldn't get to it) - not that we got too close due to the crowd and the music.

The stand was busy but had no relation to engineering, performance or motorsport. I guess that sums up the future of the brand in a nutshell frown

Sums things up perfectly. Car makers now increasingly aren't about selling cars, they are about selling short term leases to the youtube generation for glorified tech/screens that are funky. The car itself is largely an irrelevant shell around the product - as we go more electric the brand differentiator is the interior and the screen tech, not the vehicle. It's just going to be marketing from this point onwards. A really exciting time to be alive... frown

As to the CSL - it looks like they've fixed the grille - or at least come up with a 'big grille' face that works with the design better. If that face was on the rest of the 3/4 series cars I'd actually consider one. Shame they probably won't push it down to such things as the M3.

Park your normal BMW in one of the more dodgy bits of an inner city and it too will end up looking something like this.

It hasn't got the full height "mouth" as per the standard M3/M4

This! F*ckng Radio 1 TikTok vibe music. Do they think people willing to shell out that much money for an M car align themselves with that? I know it was outside but they really couldn't read the room.

I got there with a free ticket from BMW which also entitled me to use their spectator seating. You only had to wait 2 and a half hours though, and then you could only sit there for less time than that.

Really felt valued as a BMW customer.

Buy something or do one.

When I visited there were 2x M3 Touring, an E30 M3, E46 M3 CSL, G82 M4 CSL, F90 M5 CS and of course the M1 on the roof (and some others I can't recall). Is that not enough engineering, performance and motorsport? You also of course had all the other BMWs available in the paddocks and other BMW stands and the central feature.

Let's hope it's better than the original E9 CSL. I had one of those about 20years ago, real disappointment. My E24 was better....

Give me a M2 CSL with a manual and actual weight loss and I'll check back in.

Otherwise. Marketing.

I like it looks very close to the 3.0 CSL hommage they did but I don't like the roof spoiler even though that had one as well it looked better resolved, will have to wait until all the camo comes off.

I was thinking "well done, BMW" until reading the comment about the expected price. If it really is going to cost about £500k then it's a massive missed opportunity IMO.

It it had been circa £150k I was debating how I could possibly man-maths my way into one (even if it was possible to order one). But £500k? Not even remotely at that money. It'll be an irrelevance.

Shame. Bring on the manual M2 please, for the real-world enthusiasts, at a sensible fair price. I will continue to keep what I have.

I’d have loved to have seen those, but it would have meant shouldering my way through a crowd listening to a DJ set (and were not looking at cars) in order to find them, and then listening to said set the whole time I was there.

The M cars in the paddocks were great, but it felt to me like the DJ was the reason they had a stand with cars as decoration, not vice versa. Combined with this it doesn’t fill me with joy it has to be said.

Maybe some of you lot should have asked said DJ for some ecstacy - it might have cheered you up a bit.
