Help Identifying herbs

I wanted a little herb garden, so I bought one, then forgot what I bought and planted.

I can get 2 out of 5…

1. Rosemary
2. I’ve been using this as basil…
3.
4. Bay leaf
5.

No 2. looks to be either Marjoram or Oregano and 3 could be Thyme?

Think 2 is oregano, 3 is some type of thyme and 5 could be a type of mint

I'd suggest:

1. Rosemary
2. Looks more like oregano
3. Looks like a thyme plant that has flowered
4. Bay leaf
5. Either sage or a ropey looking mint plant - should be able to smell mint if it is

Best way would be to crush a leaf and sniff. Most herbs are pretty distinctive.



No. 5 looks like a version of mint to me (there are hundreds of variants) but if it is a type of sage it will have soft, almost hairy, leaves.

Agree - tricky because 3 and 5 are variegated

TBH you will be better separating them and planting them in large pots as they are very vigorous.

I'd go with the above as well, pretty sure on the oregano, mine has flowers on now which is a real givewaway

Inclined to go with this as they seem like herbs I’d get!

2 would be oregano, I distinctly remember turning my nose up at marjoram!

Moving soon, so they’ll stay in the single pot for now.

I would definitely get those into separate pots, though the marjoram / oregano and thyme could stay together.

Rosemary and sage will become huge shrubs given half the chance, which is nice, plus they are attractive to pollinating insects.

Bay will become a tree in time, again nice since it's evergreen.

Should the Bay be protected over winter when 'tis that young?

Echo boyse7en - if you crush a leaf from each of the plants the honks are quite distinctive. Assuming you already know what they smell like!
