Return to Albuquerqe via Valles Caldera and Jemez (watch out for speed traps in the pueblo). As you head onto that road at the Los Alamos end you'll have to stop at a check point and show your passport before they let you drive past the area with the current nuclear laboratories.

Thanks - am going for work - a USEPA conference). I won’t have a car though, so will be a bit restricted, and will rely on taxis for sightseeing (out of my pocket, don’t worry folks).Los Alamos - fascinating to see.

Seeing as this is Pistonheads we got lucky when we were there for one night as a bunch of guys with old American cars had gathered in Old Town Plaza, no idea if that’s a regular thing.
We went to the Noisy Water Winery for a few glasses. They’re extremely passionate about their wine but let’s be honest there’s a reason New Mexico wine doesn’t feature on many wine lists but the cured meat and cheese platter was very good.
We stayed at the El Vado motel which is on the old Route 66 which is pretty cool. Unfortunately for us it was January so not exactly warm enough to enjoy the pool. They’ve got a couple of food concessions there which are apparently pretty good. I assume you’ll already have a hotel organised if it’s a conference though?
As a city it didn’t really appear to be built for walking around and I had read in advance that walking around wasn’t very safe in quite a lot of the city so definitely worth using Uber if that’s to be believed. In august I’m guessing you’ll not want to venture too far from an air conditioned car/bar anyway!

Arial tramway (cable car) to the top of sandia peak. or hire a car and the bridge over the rio grande and on to santa fe, at a real push you can do the grand canyon in 2 days but might need a co driver as its a long way in such a short time, but has been done, in winter and included petrified forest NP.
