I've had insurance companies take my payment a few days after the start date, which made me nervous enough, but never had it go a month with no payment taken.

Read the paperwork that has come through very carefully - I read recently about someone getting done for no insurance after they received the certificate, schedule, etc. and assuming they were insured. They missed a letter saying they needed to confirm that they wanted the policy for it to be activated. Here's the article...

I'd had a new card and my insurance didn't automatically renew when I thought it would, had an email from them asking to call and sort it.
You should really call them, I'm sure they'll have a get out clause if something happens and you haven't paid them any money for the term of the policy.

If I call do I just ask if I am insured Yes or No end of conversation or do I continue and say payment has not been taken as said had this before with breakdown cover admittedly only £60 they said payment had been taken from card ending in ++++ which was correct but never came out of account obviously this is nearer £500

How would you feel if they charged you twice?Stev8s said:

No, you explain exactly what’s happened. Unless of course you don’t mind running the risk of not having valid car insurance.
Ok guys you've convinced me just phoned them the one with the big red telephone spoke to someone working in his bathroom lol firstly he said all ok then changed his mind as apparently they have had a issue on there system where emails not going out regarding renewals and mine was maybe one of them said to wait a couple of weeks to be honest wasn't happy with that so managed to take payment.
All sorted but you can easily see how things can get missed or overlooked

As far as I'm aware, they have to send you notification of insurance renewal in the post still, 21 days before minimum I think?.
An email renewal notice is nice (I got one) but legally, it has to be by post. On my last one, the last 4 digits of the card that will be used was also on the renewal.

Just thinking I may have had a new card since but does it take over a month for them to notice
Hell no. I have just had an E-Mail from Merseyflow (bridge toll near Liverpool) to say key card ending XXXX is due to expire. Yes, but at the end of August (plonked that into my e-calendar to update all such payments through that card).Have related this story before but it's relevant.
Mrs got her renewal, we did a check around at it was there or thereabouts so she rang them up and renewed on the phone. All well and good, in a day or two the letter arrives saying thank you for renewing your full documents will be with you in a few days.
The next Monday I cleared off on a two week work trip.
During this 2 week trip Mrs rings me up one morning second week in a panic as letter has arrived saying that her insurance has been cancelled on dd/mm/yy. She'd been running around uninsured for 3 or 4 days at this point.
Phoning the insurance company had resulted in them admitting this problem was not down to her but their call centre agent had made a computer error in processing the payment so it hadn't gone through. So my Mrs had said OK we'll do the renewal now then.
However a dystopian computer says no scenario fired up as by now the renewal offer expiry date had passed. Insurer insisted that they could not hold to the renewal on time offer as it had expired and they had to do a new quote.
Over a series of apparently increasingly fraught conversations with increasingly senior people the premium went from the original 165 of the renewal, next was 250 which Mrs F refused, supervisor recalced to 400+, manager ended up near enough £800. At which point Mrs had told them to stuff it and for the rest of the time I was away which was 3 days Miss F walked to/ from school frankly no hardship, and Mrs F went to work on the bus.
There was no chance afterwards of making them see sense, and essentially it was tough, sorry we screwed up you'll just have to suck it up. Could have gone to regulator with a complaint but as by then we'd gone with another outfit for a few pounds less decided it wasn't worth the emotional energy but that outfit has never had a penny of mine or work money for insurance, breakdown services or anything else ever again.
In case you're wondering who it was, their breakdown vans are not and have never been yellow.
Since then after renewing have always checked the payment has gone and a check every so often with askmid. Just to be sure.
