About to get a ban - some questions

I collected two tickets either side of Christmas Day, the last meaning 12 points. The single justice notice just came through for the second one, which will mean a ban. I’ve got a few questions I hope you can help with.
1) How long after sending my guilty plead by post am I likely to be able to continue to drive for? I.e. Is it rubber stamped, or does it still have to go to a magistrate to deal? There are no extenuating circumstances (apart from me being an arrogant dick.). This is the Bristol SEU.
2) Is it effective only when I get the paperwork back?
3) When I get to drive again, I assume I’ll be on zero points, but will my insurers whack me extra hard having had a ban?
4) While I’m banned can I add my friend to my insurance as my helpful driver for the occasional trip, even though I can’t drive?
5) If I get an international driving permit from the post office, will I be able to hire overseas?

Somebody will be along with a comprehensive response shortly. Your points will all still be on your licence. They stay for 4 years I believe, and are active for 3 years for ‘totting’ up. You will not be able to drive abroad whilst banned, as you will not have a licence to drive.

Ignore the previous poster, who is apparently unfamiliar with the SJPN process in England in Wales.

ETA: and has deleted his reply. Very embarrassing.

1. Don’t deal with the SJPN by post. Make your plea online. A single magistrate will review your plea no sooner than 28 days after the Posting Date. You will then be sent a Notice of Proposed Disqualification. The deadline to respond to the NOPD will be about a month later.

2. Effective from the date mentioned on the NOPD.

3. If there’s a totting up ban then 0 points thereafter, but the convictions remain on your driving record. The points slate is wiped clean.

4. Ask your broker.

Ref number 5.
Even if you have a IDP from the post office this doesn't count as a licence, these only translate your driving licence details to make it easier for police and other authorities to read.
You'll still need a licence to hire..

Update, I pleaded guilty, using the online formats above, and got a letter requiring my attendance at court in another couple of months. This is so annoying, I want to get on and serve the ban as I have something yummy on order. Also the court is in the back of beyond and the letter is explicit in that the ban is effective immediately so don’t drive to court, grrr. Is there any reason usually? (It is a straightforward cumulating of SP30s, the last two doing 81 mph in 70 zones). Can I do anything to get them to process it online?

Maybe don’t buy a new car until you have a valid licence again and have received a new insurance quote.

In any case where a ban is an option attendance at court is mandatory

I know its not what you want to hear but that's how the court system works.

Not now, but you could arrange to attend by video link (CVP).

The ban will start immediately if he is given one at court, so if he drives to court and gets banned he then won’t be able to drive his car away from the court.

thanks, i've no idea and was sure i had read it previosly, perhaps i got confused with the 12 points however if he is banned the length is backdated to the letter he received if it's states "effective immediately"?

If it's anything like mine (a short ban for the most recent speeding, rather than "only" points, which would have seen me totting 12 up) but I could drive TO court, but as soon as they say "a ban is the sentence", you're getting the bus home.

If it's anything like mine (a short ban for the most recent speeding, rather than "only" points, which would have seen me totting 12 up) but I could drive TO court, but as soon as they say "a ban is the sentence", you're getting the bus home.

I forget where, but some years ago, the dailies were full of some clever scrote who drove to court knowing he was going to get banned, parked around the corner, got his ban & was seen by the BiB also in court getting into his car & was duly stopped & returned to the justice process, eventually ending in prison.

How long does a ban have to be for you to actually lose your licence as opposed to keep it but not be allowed to use it in UK for a time?

if you write to the court letting them know you've got a new car on order and can't really be bothered to listen to what they have to say they'll probably fast track it for you.
