Dear all,

I have lived outside the UK for 12 years now and am thinking of permanently returning soon and will be buying a car. My question is, am I able to reclaim my full no claims that I had on leaving the UK? For the life of me, I can't remember who I was insured with last. Is there a way I can check into this?

Thanks in advance.

No claims bonus are usually valid for 2 years from the date of expiry of your last policy.

Some insurers allow 3.

After 12 years, I doubt you will have any

It is worth noting though (depending on where you are moving back from and their system) that some companies will accept or take into account NCB from other countries - often seems to be specialists but I’ve dealt with NCB docs from other countries for a mainstream insurer in the past also.

Anything is possible with NCB - it means whatever any insurance company wants it to mean.

when I insured a second car with no "no claims" due to already using my no claims on another car. It put the price up by 3% compared to using my 35 odd years of no claims by transferring it from the other car. I was 54 years old so that may have made a difference.

If you can provide an equivalent to NCD or provide some sort of evidence you are accident free in your time abroad, i'm sure if you spent and hour or two on the phone to various insurers you would find an introductory bonus of some sort somewhere.

For what its worth i've found Direct Line and Saga to have good competent call centres, NFU brilliant in that they have local offices staffed by switched on people but premiums can vary from absolute bargain to the eye watering.
I don't think DL or NFU will be found on the usual comparison sites.

Thank you for the replies. I pretty much know where I stand now.
