For anyone not clicking on the link, basically all the most dangerous cities are in North and South America, except for one city in South Africa. That was a bit surprising. I would have thought some places in Africa or Asia would be on the list. Maybe because they only count murders rather than deaths in total so deaths from wars, civil wars or killings by governments are not included.

Still a bit grim. Was texting a good friend in the US who regularly travels in SA. Said he had been to many places on the list. Eye opening comment was that you can’t trust the police. His company relies wholly on private security firms to keep employees safe.

To be fair, for the most part if you’re not involved in the gang / cartel violence you’re not really at much greater risk than in many other places. I’ve enjoyed quite a few of the cities on that list!

I've been to Tijuana, which seems to be top of the list.

Seemed OK, didn't get murdered. The coastline just south of Tijuana is spectacular.

We did drive along a 2 lane road that looked quite arterial only to enter a tunnel that after about 100m had been filled in. Just a wall of rubble top to bottom. Quick sharp 3 point and hot footed it out of there.

We couldn't have been more conspicuous in a rented red Mustang that we probably shouldn't have driven across the border in the first place.

Only an Orange Lamborghini Miura playing "On Days like These" on the stereo would have been more conspicuous.

Sadly, none of that was an opinion. It was factual.

I'm surprised at Tijuana. I've been there and its a horrible tourist trap, with coaches coming from San Diego but it felt safe as the markets and other businesses relied on the casual day tourists from America.

On the other hand, my American colleague's wife who is from Colombia, every single one of her family has been held. up at gunpoint at sometime in their life....

Yeah! Too right! You just go ahead and put Vasco in his place! woohoo

I mean seriously, Vasco, what were you thinking?!? It's almost as though you thought you'd seen several US cities in that list, and we all know how absurd that is because, err, well, USA! USA! USA! biggrin

Haha, in a thread about dangerous cities, many of which are in the USA, comments about frequent gun violence is quite apt.

You do realise that gun violence is dangerous, right?!

Tijuana is a battleground for the cartels, they all want control as it's a good staging post for smuggling into the US.

Between that, kidnappings for ransom and general street crime from people trying to make money off the tourist trade (prostitution, drugs etc). It's lively.

rofl

That's a bit of an over-reaction. Something a bit too close to home?

And far more than one per week

Number of US cities in the list: 4
Number of cities in developed countries in the list: 0

By almost every single metric the UK is a far better place to live than the US. The single biggest difference is we like to moan whilst Americans chant “USA! USA!” despite the fact that we have higher life satisfaction.

Not strictly true. On steaks, V8s and entertaining politicians they’re way ahead of us…
