Someone I know was booked on an early afternoon flight today.

It was cancelled shortly after joining the checkin queue. Next flight is on Thursday, that would be 2 days in on a proposed 6 day holiday.

Passengers were merely handed a piece of paper showing how to reclaim the cost of the flight. No other details were given, or offered.

They booked a flight to Italy @ £300 and then a Coach ticket @ £X to take them to their destination. So instead of getting there at say 4pm today, it will be 2:30am tomorrow instead.

Am I right in saying that they can reclaim these costs, plus the cost of an evening meal, from the original provider?

Pre Brexit it was the value of the flight then a sliding scale of 'Compo' depending on time taken from original arrival time to actual arrival time.

I'm sure it's changed now though and hopefully someone will be along shortly with specifics.

Nope. We carried over that law.

Worth a read https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight_Compensatio...

EU reg 261, gives the available compo rates, put a claim in via your airline.
My kid just got £519 flight cancellation compo for a transatlantic flight cancelled at 14hrs nearly 8 weeks ago

And if the airline fobs you off by claiming a delay 'due to factors beyond their control' then there are some legal firms that offer a smooth, if lengthy, no win no fee service.

BA cancelled our 11am Heathrow-Nice flight at 3am a few days ago and we were already checked in online. We had a couple of nights non-refundable accommodation (£200) that we are claiming for via their website, fingers crossed. It's going to be a crappy summer for anyone wanting a short haul flight. A shoddy situation for us made worse by their profiteering, offering us just one or two alternatives a couple of days later at a full ten times the price. We'll take our refund and drive instead.

Mrs EK3 and I went to Amsterdam a month ago, return flight cancelled at checkin - Easyjet, no rep at Schipol, everything through app which frankly wasn’t working as 3000 of other people were trying simultaneously to sort how to get home. Had to accept EJ flight 2 days later. Headed back into Amsterdam, hotel another 2 nights, at a premium because huge demand for rooms due to displaced passengers. Heading for airport 2 days later, replacement flight cancelled. New one with EJ given for next day, which after going technical after boarding, left an hour late.

Easyjet blame ATC for cancellation so denying compo on any flight. We are currently well over £1000 out of pocket (hotel, food etc, taxis, 2 days loss of earnings) with little chance of Easyjet paying up

P1ssed off? You bet

My understanding is paying for hotels, taxis is an absolute requirement. The compensation element is avoidable in exceptional circumstances. If they are genuine of course…

If you were an airline, bumping 3000+ a day, you are going to lie about reason for cancellation - the sums of money involved are huge - we all know they are being cheapskates, binning employees during covid hoping they would come back gratefully on reduced contracts… which they haven’t

Also have it on good authority lack of baggage handlers/check-in and general security down to ground handling company at Gatwick contract up for renewal very soon, so not wanting to employ new staff in case they don’t get the new contract… that’s even if they can get the new airside staff DBS checked sometime this year

They must have known the demand for flights was going to be silly post covid, but it appears bugger all planning was used in getting the staff in place and ready - literally just winging it

A real pita at the moment.
We never bother flying, parking the car, long hot sweaty farty queues, kids screaming, the cattle herding at the gate, tight seats, sht & p1ss stained aircraft toilet then the same debacle at the other end.

Chunnell then a civilised drive to wherever we feel like going . We've done 17 European countries Inc southern Italy and Spain,Greece, Turkey plus Eastern European inc Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Lithuania ect.
No ties, stopping off at some great places & the biggest plus, no airports...
