I've just been up to my local fete (it was only a 750 mile round trip as I'm down south at present) - anyway it gave me the chance to try out the 80 - 400 ED VR for the first time (I know, I'm buying too many lenses).

The VR system is just stunning - virtually eliminating all camera shake even at 400mm (600mm effective). It does drain the batteries a bit (especially if you forget to turn off the VR) but It's perfect for candid portraits / wildlife - pin sharp and HIGHLY reccommended. if you have some cash burning a hole in your piggy, consider this lens.

These from about 5, 10 and 25 yards

Love the ambience and expression in (1).

However I think the bloke in (3), stoned on Strongbow, is planning to go over and deck the bloke with the flash camera!

That's why I was 25 yards away - give myself a head start.

Nice shots as ever, Steve.

I was at Petworth recently trying to photograph deer with my 70-300G (a very budget lens)...and really wasn't getting the results I wanted. I'm tempted by the VR80-400 lens and the D70 autofocus firmware update...

BTW the guy in pic 2 was trying (and failing) to catch this:

Highly entertaining sport egg catching. Also reccommended.

Please don't post stuff like this, with my recent exploits in purchasing flash new home cinema kit, my savings kitty is plummeting horrifically.

Another £800 odd on a lens isn't what I need right now.

Although the other half doesn't really need a car does she? not as much as I need this lens? surely?

Yep, cos it means when she's gone I don't have to listed to her complain about me spending over a grand on a TV when the one I already have is "fine".

Just kidding, she doesn't say a word, but I can tell she's thinking it. I wont tell her how much the speakers, Amp and DVD player are adding to the running total...
