BMW 640i Gran Coupe - slow seller?
Discussion
I'm interested in buying a 640i Gran Coupe soon. Something 17 or 67 plate.
In the 3 months that I've been watching them on Autotrader not one of them has sold.
I feel that I'm looking at desirable yet undesirable cars. This could be down to current fuel prices or maybe they were never that popular.
Spec levels seem to be at the extremes - either hardly any options or full of options but with prices to match.
Can anybody tell me if I'm making a mistake buying one of these cars? Am I going to be stuck with something I'll never be able to sell again?

That's a really good point actually. There doesn't seem to be much churn in the market that's for sure.
I'm just slightly nervous about buying one of the wrong spec. Theres a blue 18 plate car at a sky high price but it doed have pretty much everything on it but it's about £6.5k more than the next car. I don't think it's worth paying the extra.

I've had my 640d Gran Coupe for just over two years and it replaced a F31 330d Touring.
They are great cars for long journeys being comfortable and economical, however my wife now has a X3 M40d and it makes the 6 series feel really quite old. You also have to remember they are big cars and they feel it when you drive them.
Ultimately you will get one hell of a car for the money but have to accept that it won't be cheap to run and some spares can be quite expensive. Genuine BMW air filter and pollen filters from BMW cost over £180! Front discs are £150 each.
I like mine but do miss the 3 series.

I've checked out the cost of service items already.
Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres are about £250 each ish.
Everything else is moderately expensive but I don't do many miles so apart from annual oil changes stuff like pollen filters should last at least two years and brakes will last a lifetime if I replace them.

Both of the above! When new, compared to the petrol, diesel was still in favour. The diesel has more torque to move what is a big car, is ultimately just as quick (with less effort) and I have averaged 45 mpg in my 640d. The cost being the diesel sound most noticeably on tick over.I was open to a petrol or diesel when I bought. With current fuel prices I appreciate the diesel.
I think prices on late models will tumble soon (current peak prices/ big engines/ older car)
However, I love mine and think it’s one of BMWs nicest looking cars.
I’m 50k miles into mine now
I love it, big car and still looks good.
Servicing and parts can be expensive as it was a 65k plus options car new, mine is 7 years old now, has cost me roughly 4K in servicing and parts for the millage I have covered.
I run ps4 non run flat tyres now as I was sick of eggs in the sidewalls.
I have most options apart from comfort seats (which are excellent) and the b&o sound system.
Mine is non standard, as I tend to tinker, buying an up gti to run along side it as realistically I’d need to put 40k to the equivalent 840
I may possibly upgrade the infotainment system, but in all honesty sat nav and music is streamed of my phone.
I change the oil every 10k, and would recommend this to anyone who runs these as 20k is to much.

I wrapped the interior of mine as I did not like the aluminium trim

If you are prepared to use an Independent BMW specialist then the servicing isn’t over priced. I’ve only covered 16k in mine so far and had oil, brake fluid, then oil filters and vehicle check. The last one was sub £300 all in if I remember rightly.
Independents mostly use original manufacturer parts, BMW don’t make pollen filters they simply sell them for far more than the same one costs in a non bmw box.
Oil every 10k on any car, and if driven hard more than cruising then 5k. Latter just a personal preference.
I think the oil only service pre crazy oil/fuel prices was about £130.

What will you use it for and how long do you intend to keep it?
I'll probably do 5k miles a year or less and I do keep cars long term. Current car I've had over 4 years and the next one I might keep even longer. As for servicing as i keep cars to an age where condition matters more than anything I'll happily do all of the servicing myself as I'm take more care than any mechanic will.
We have one (2014) as a third car. Elegant, quiet and properly fast when you want it.
Ours is a 640i SE with no body kit or sports exhaust. Not many options (top ICE package and not much else) but it really doesn’t need them. I like discreet up to a point. One of 12 according to the web so a rare beast. It’s also only just clicked over 20k miles. I run it on 19” Continentals (not run flat) and the ride is lovely. The stock 18” 245s aren’t wide enough for the power.
It does low 30s mpg (less is available in Sport ) but if you’re not doing too many miles, it’s no big deal. Very pleased with it. While I’ve no doubt the diesel is very good, at the end of the day, the petrol is so much smoother and quieter so unless you want to do mega miles, get the petrol.
