Claiming back stamp duty
Discussion
Don't know if this can be done but we bought our gaff last year just missing out on the reduced stamp duty.Moved in Nov 21.Wife utterly dislikes new area so we are moving back to previous area.Present gaff sold stc and should be complete in August. We have found new gaff and this should also complete in August along with another chunk of stamp to be paid.
My question is can we claim back the stamp duty we paid in Nov 21 due to not living there very long.I'm sure I've heard/read somewhere that this is possible?I've emailed our conveyancing solicitor but she didn't know and advised to speak to an accountant. As I don't know any but I know there are a few knowledgeable finance fellows on here.
TIA

No, you can only claim a stamp duty refund if you paid stamp duty on the new place as if it was a second home because you hadn’t yet sold your main residence. If you sell the main residence within three years you can get a refund on the difference. You can’t get a refund just because you messed up and bought somewhere you didn’t like so decide to sell quick
