FOR not wearing a seat belt ?

Note : I'm not in trouble or anything, it's just that the other week I was pushing my wheel barrow up the lane on the way to my allotment lookiing like tom good. As I was waiting to cross the main road, I noticed maybe 30% of drivers and passengers Not wearing their seat belts. Since then I have been looking and have noticed a pretty high proportion with out them.

I don't want to offend anyone, but most cars have them as standard issue (I had to go out and search for some for the back of my C reg Cavalier as they were an option) so why NOT put them on.

Can anyone give me any reason why not ?

I dont first thing in the moning to work as it creases my shirt & tie. My way of thinking is I probably wont crash so i probably wont need my belt, if i put it on i WILL crease my shirt, its a gamble but its paid off so far....

I am of course sort of joking..

A doctor's certificate will suffice, and to get that, you need a very good reason. For instance, someone who has pathology of or has had recent surgery to their chest or pelvis may argue that pain ensues even with the lightest touch. Of course I am referring to passengers here as people falling into the above groups wouldn't be driving! Unfortunately, the excuse that their clothes will get creased doesn't wash.

Pregnant, cracked ribs, man boobs, rebel, stupid, only driving a few miles?

All the yellow police vans in Liverpool seem to have seat belts fitted, yet not one PC wears one - obviously so they can get out quickly in an emergency situation

maybe it's because they have 'I'm hard' neurosis,
Social disobedience, or reversing!

cameras can't spot it either.

One of my pet hates is watching kids messing around in either the front or back, with no seat belts on!

Ok some cars don't have rear seat belts but the majority must have by now...

Laughed so hard at the creases in the shirt and tie !!!

Last night I was next to a 735i with 2 kids in the back (pretty blond girls aged about 8 or 9) kneeling up, waving at the other traffic. Dad had no belt, mother did.

And they always seem to have a 'baby on board', 'young child on board', or some other pointless sticker.

Mine did not but :

£14 and a trip to Wrexham, plus I phoned every scrap yard from Lancaster to Chester, which took about 4 days, and eventually a mk2 cavalier owners club forum friend found them and bought them on the off chance that I would refund him.

try having a crash in a car without wearing a seatbelt. Tried it once wearing one. Thank my good sence I was. Would not be here now if I wasnt.

Its a delayed darwin effect for the cleaver people not wearing a belt.

I have attended many RTA's, some of those were drivers and passengers not wearing seatbelts. It isn't pretty at all, one of these included a face ripped off on the way out.

Yes, there is always a counter argument of "I am a great driver, and if I crash, what if the seat belt holds me in etc etc"

Personally I wouldn't even drive to the local shop without a belt on, or the rest of the cars occupants either.

Don't do walking for shopping before anyone asks.

Used to crew for an Emergency Ambulance on the Isle of Man.

It certainly makes you realise just how vulnerable people are.

Sadly most people seem to think that it will never happen to them.....

Funny that - had it drummed into me by my father. Never drive anywhere without a belt on.... even in a car park moving space....

Anybody not wearing a set belt and having an accident with injuries that would have been prevented or substantially reduced by wearing a set belt should pay their own NHS costs for those injuries.

Just plain ignorance and stupidity to be given a safety device, then not to wear it and expect the rest of us to pick up the tab for the cost when the worst happens.

Seatbelts make me feel nervous.

I won't go anywhere without a four-point harness on.

Personally I prefer to wear a seatbelt, but it shouldn't be the decision of a self-righteous government beaurocrat as to whether I meet my end headbutting the wheel or being trapped upside down.

The weight of a human on the belt means you can't press the button hard enough to unclip it. Believe me, I've been there. A sideways collision will deem a belt useless. Again, I've been there.

Out of my 2 accidents (see above), one was made worse by a seatbelt, and the other was not affected at all by wearing a seatbelt. But I'll still wear one, as I don't want to tempt fate.

Of course, children should err on the side of caution and be made to wear them, as they are not old enough to make an informed decision.

How was it made worse by wearing a seat belt?

The idea behind seatbelt compulsory use and crash helment for m.bikes is becasue of the cost to the taxpayer in picking up the pieces.
a person not wearing a belt is affecting the rest of the population for the extra resources and cost it will cost in the event of a crash.

Ironic isnt it that there wont be a state pension in the future because there will be to many 'old' people because people are living longer. Perhaps if seat belts & helmets wasn't compulsary more people would die & the survivors will still have a pension when they retire....

CDs have taken the place of LPs & cassettes, do people think air bags have taken over from seat belts?

Please dont take any of my comments too seriously im just thinking aloud.

I wear one - always. As Silverback Mike says, you just need to see one crash without.

I always wear full leathers, helmet, boots and gloves on the bike as well - even if I'm just nipping into town. All the gear all the time.

It doesn't matter how good you are - it's the other eejits you need to worry about.

But it's my choice and I'm not about to go round preaching at anyone riding without kit or driving without a belt. Your choice too...
