Thought it would be interesting to balance the 500 quid thread with some real world stuff from an obviously more affluent audience than the average. By savings I mean any financial holding etc that could be liquidated fairly quickly (so not pensions) - stocks/shares/bonds/cash etc rather thanRolex's and air cooled 911's
Edit - already 1 in 6 with £1m plus, obviously went too light at the top end

Lots of votes, not many posts!
I voted for the savings, but in reality am overall in debt due to the mortgage.
I guess people don't want to say what their savings are! I didn't count the mortgage as if the house was sold the equity I have would increase my savings 4 fold. It also isn't a financial holding that can be liquidated quickly as the post said. I voted for the savings, but in reality am overall in debt due to the mortgage.

Hold on whilst I ring my private bank in Zurich and ask them to read out the list of numbers really slowly
Should you not ask your head Butler to ascertain that?

Isn't a measure of savings alone misleading as it is possible to have a large savings pot alongside a large debt (and most people probably do if they have a mortgage / car loan etc).
i.e. We took a bunch of cash out of a house and had it in a savings account for a while. We'd be able to tick a big number for the purposes of this thread but it doesn't tell the whole story.
Me personally, I track my overall net worth over time. i.e. sum up all assets and deduct all big liabilities. It's the equivalent of a budget version of the Times rich list calculation.....
Things I include : houses, cars, savings, stocks and shares, pensions, (mortgages) etc.
This way, you can measure overall growth over time which is somewhat different to the "savings pot" component alone: which is really just a measure of cash flow at a moment in time.

Much of my "savings" is my kitchen budget.
