Any recommendations for good garage in (or fairly near) York?

One that isn't over top on MOT's, and has open workshop attitude.

Type I don't want is those that think every car needs to be as brand new to pass, and fail bushings for initial stages of cracking without excessive play, brake pipes for initial light rust that clearly isn't going to be an issue for a long time and takes me minutes to sand off and spray to stop future rusting, or consider any ball joint play is instant-fail where other places then confirm actually, it's very slight and takes good force to cause a margin of a mm play so will pass it with appropriate entry on cert so it can get done shortly, rather than stick you with a fail and imminent need to mess about finding somewhere to work on car yourself if just got it or forgot.

Also, rather avoid places with secretary wall up front, that gets annoying if you want a quick word, then have to walk to office, tell sec, who puts message through, then wait 25 minutes just to see if they can look at something quick, I.e ask tester if would pass something not needing car on ramp to get at & see before booking MOT for a few weeks time to know if needs doing first or not.

Ask as I've stumbled on a few of above over years, looking for a trusty easy in, easy out, hassle free garage run by good folk to MOT & call on in York area.

Cheers for any suggestions...

I’ve not used him (yet) although I popped in the other day to get a quote, but two friends have independently recommended Bryn’s at the Raynor Centre on James Street.

I don’t know if he does his own MOTs or uses the unit in the same estate though.

I always get my MOTs from the place on Hospital Fields Road as they always seem very fair (no daft recommendations) and have allowed me to inspect failures through corrosion in the past. They don’t do work on cars either, although this might not give you the flexibility you’re looking for.

I use Automotive Solutions on Poppleton Rd industrial estate. Officially a BMW/Mini specialist (thats how I found them - to look after my Minis) but they've since done a load of work on my modified VW van and I'll be speaking to them about my new Merc when it needs anything.

Give them a call or pop in - they're top notch. Won't use anyone else.
