BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition | Spotted

Don't fancy a new M4 CSL? Well, the old DTM was more special than you might remember...

Remember the old BMW M4 GTS? Quite the M car it was, with 500hp from its straight six thanks to water injection, three-way adjustable suspension, ceramic brakes and a 7:28 Nurburgring lap. Which still makes it faster than the new Touring. And quite a few things, actually - anything going less than seven and a half minutes isn’t messing around.

Trouble was the M4 GTS looked pretty divisive - mainly thanks to the orange bits - and that facet of the car tended to dominate the discussion rather than what it was like to drive. A list price twice that of a standard M4 didn’t curry much favour, either. BMW made 700 GTSes, with around 30 coming to the UK, and a discussion thread about crashing into Halfords continues to run (probably) to this day.

But the M4 GTS story didn’t end once all those original cars had been sold. Because the mechanical package returned in the M4 DTM Champion Edition, a car launched at the end of 2016 to celebrate Marco Wittman’s title. Which is pretty cool; normally these cars tend to be little more than stickers - see the M140i Championship Edition - so to have the full GTS makeover applied to a 200-unit production run is notable. It was just as serious an overhaul, too, just without the orange. Look at those seats!

Furthermore, while a white 4 Series daubed with the M tricolour and fitted with a big wing won’t be universally popular, it’s easy to imagine the DTM winning more fans with its looks than the GTS. This isn’t race car for the road whatever the marketing spiel might have said, though it could be said with more conviction that this carries off the GT3 RS-style makeover with greater success than the GTS.

The DTM has additional appeal for collectors as a rarer car than the GTS, with only 15 from the 200 ever sold here. So it’s pretty incredible that six of those are currently for sale on PH, or 40 per cent of the UK allocation. There’s everything from delivery mileage examples that are five years old to those that have racked up almost 15,000 miles in that time. This particular DTM sits somewhere in between, with 3,000 miles, a full BMW service history and two owners.

It’s for sale at £89,950; an original UK RRP is hard to track down (it was €148,500, and a GTS was £121,780) but that’s going to represent a handy saving off new. It’s possible to pay £83,000 for a higher mileage GTS, or as much as £120k for one that remains essentially new. Which sneaks in under the new asking price of a £128k CSL. So if you do want a racy M4 with a DCT, without orange bits, with rarity very much on its side and not a silly grille in sight, perhaps a DTM is the answer. Plenty to choose from at the moment, too…

My local Sytner had one of these in a while ago. Way out if my price range but it was a cool thing in the flesh. Doubt many will see any actual use though.

I know it's all about the ///M fappery, but that spoiler, and parts of the interior, look like full-on Halfords specials.

One came to the local pub club this week, only other time I’ve seen one was at PHSS BMW.

I missed these when they first came out too, and I only recently noticed them when I've been browsing the G82 M4 on BMW AUC. A nice and rare car I reckon, and a useful BHP increase over the standard cars as well.

Actually looks reasonable value against a new M3 / M4.

Should hold value pretty well, and must be a hoot to drive!

Only 2 seats I think is a drawback!

Fully respect it is a special car but it looks like a worthy candidate for the badly modified thread.

Quite simply because the added seats add plenty of practicality, for about the same weight as the roll cage, which without forward bracing is so not increasing chassis torsional rigidity.

This is not a "track car", it is a fast road car that could be taken on track.

The roll cage and rear seat removal is "race car gimmickry", for a 1700kg sports car.

Added to which an F82CS or even an F80CS is a prettier and more useful thing with more than enough power TBH.

Not quite as rare, but a good deal less expensive ....

This wouldn't be any good to me either because I have 2 kids, and at least with my standard F82 M4 I can take the kids out with me. I do really like 2 seaters don't get my wrong(I have a 370Z Roadster), but the 2 seat part of this arguably limits the appeal I think. I'd still love a go in it though! driving

I never thought about it not really adding rigidity between the front and rear but I guess you're right. There must be a significant safety addition for these though which is important when your bespoke car collection service loads your newest asset Pork GT3 RS from "BlueChip Sales" and takes it direct to it's heated, humidity controlled storage.

Tbh I prefer the gts. Not a fan of white cars nor stripes nor black alloys.
And didn’t mind the orange accents at all.
