It's not impossible
There are others, but I would probably start with Tissot.

I struggle a little with "elegant" and stainless steel bracelet.

I agree, but it’s for a youth who will likely trash a leather band.Orient are real watchmakers -

Only stumbled across this thread as it was in my "what's new" section, but I love that watch. My only reservations are that it seems to be described as a ladies' watch and the bezel is much shinier in some of the other photos - I really like the matt finish in the linked pic. There are others, but I would probably start with Tissot.

Good call.
This is over size and budget but nice nevertheless. A bit on the sports side, but I would prefer a bracelet.
I think what I really have in mind is a Datejust type thing.

I wonder what Seiko has… will Google.

Sorry I missed out the ‘automatic’ part of the request…
Seiko is always a good call for this budget.
This reply was a nightmare/tragedy

Not a high street name, but Steeldive do a "datejust" alike -

Can't find a good shot of the bracelet.

Have a look at Timex. This one is not much over budget or there's the Marlin range.

It’s a “dive” watch. I am looking for a dress watch. But I will check out their range later thanks.https://www.timex.co.uk/waterbury-dive-automatic-4...

Agreed. Nice things. This is a quartz but I could easily get over that fact. Seems like a decent deal too.

You can get a Seiko Presage Cocktail Time with a 38.5mm dial for £300 or thereabouts, probably less.
I have a couple. The one on the left is 40.5mm, the one on the right is 38.5mm.

Official UK webpage here, plenty of options for designs and colours:
