Hi all, I'm looking for a good quality large wheeled tool chest to house all my tools in the garage. I know snap on were always the go to name but the prices are crazy. Are there any other brands at better prices? I don't want cheap rubbish but somewhere in the middle perhaps?

Thanks,
Andrew

I got a Halfords one ten years ago and it has been fine, they usually have a deal to save on the cost of the base unit and top box bundled together.

Do a search for "halfords tool chest" & there are a few threads that discuss them.

I have one of these from Costco:

It’s gone up quite a bit in price, I think I payed £550 a couple of years ago. It’s a decent toolbox for a home garage. The draw liners are crap though.

I like the clarke ones from machine mart, you can pop in there in person to check them out first as well.

I bought one from Halfords around 7 years ago it's their professional range and is a three box set, it's been faultless over the time I have had it

Had the full snap on experience when I was in the trade.
When I left to another industry, I sold the large tool chest as it was still worth a fair bit.
I then purchased a Halfords roll cab and tool box for very decent money with a trade card (that mostly anyone can apply for ) and it's been perfectly fine.
They are good quality, and perfectly suited to home mechanics.

I like the look of this, particularly because it has the drawer locks on the handles but it's a bit bigger than I can justify at the moment.

Sounds like you are pleased with it on the whole though? Draw liners can be sorted easily enough

Come on man, you can ALWAYS justify a bigger tool chest....!

I’ve got 2 very similar to the Costco one
They were £750 for the pair of them.
If I had an issue with them - it’s having the 2 fixed /2 swivel castors arrangement. I’ve swapped a smaller tool trolley over to 4 swivel castors - it makes a LOT of difference.
Of course, the castors appear bespoke to the tool chest and no standard castors fit in their place.
The MIG welder may be coming out shortly….

I live in a second floor flat - it'll take plenty of mental and physical gymnastics to go for a roll cab in the first place!

Realistically, if I went for something like that I'd have to store the base at my Mums place until I move, at which point they can be reunited.

Potentially, that costco one looks like a nice set so it's a shame its only available as a package. Realistically something like the Halfords Advanced makes more sense as I can buy the top or mid box now, and add the roll cab later... it just doesn't look as nice as that one!

Of course when I move I'll be trying to justify a proper Dura or Lista setup!

Ah! Then I seriously suggest this:

Each section unclips and may be used separately, but they all clamp on the base to form unit as easy to trundle and as any wheeled suitcase, even up stairs.

Halfords stuff is pretty good, prices do get better usually around bank holidays so worth watching them.

I have this one and am very happy with it:

https://usprotoolboxes.com/product/stainless-steel...

The fit and finish isn't absolutely perfect but the whole thing is very solid and the bearings are very smooth and feel like they'll last. It is VERY big and heavy however; despite being on casters, you wouldn't want to try to move it when it's full of tools unless you have a perfectly smooth floor.

ETA: The only other slight niggle is that it's tall enough I can't easily see in the top compartment (I'm six foot).

I’ve got two of these. Far,far better than they should be for the money.

Have a look at SGS. I've always been impressed with the value for money with their products.
