GTI MK7 vs R prices
Discussion
Having a look for a golf mk7 gti and the prices atm are crazy starting from 14-15k for a decent one whereas the golf R is more readily available from about 13k for the same shape. Is there a reason I’ve overlooked as to why the gti should be more expensive as doesn’t make sense to me.
Sidenote: for anyone who has bought the MK7 GTI in the last couple years, what did you pay?

I think the R has more potential to fall into the wrong hands, hence they end up being trashed! More Cat D’s/Cat C’s or poorly repaired undeclared damage. A £13k Golf R is gonna have a very interesting history.
The GTI is a more prestigious/classy badge in my eyes. Owned by enthusiasts/professionals.
This is coming from a mk7.5 Golf R owner before anyone starts

Back at the start of 2019 I paid £13,000 for a 2013 manual with FSH 40K miles, 3 door in red. Also got a year warranty that replaced my water pump and thermostat.
I ‘upgraded’ recently to an M2. The M2 is levels above the GTI however I’d happily buy another GTI without any thought while as much as I love the M2 I don’t know if I’d buy another M car once the itch is scratched.
As mentioned everyone just likes the GTI. It’s just a really balanced and nice package.

I recently asked questions about the GTI vs R in this thread.

A 13k golf r is going to be ropey. I test drove a 2014 manual at a main dealer and it was a great drive, I absolutely loved it.
For me it would be worth paying more for a newer 7.5 2017 on

I personally find the GTI a more appealing car, I fully accept the Golf R is a better car technically, faster, AWD etc but to me they don't have a great image, they seem to attract a certain type of driver that would previously have bought an Audi S3 and often like to deal commodities on street corners.
I think the GTI is a classier proposition and I would seriously consider a GTI Clubsport as my next purchase in a couple of years.

Are you comparing like for like with those prices, spec, mileage, history all make a huge difference and although I found a decent well looked after R you do have to kiss a lot of frogs to get there.Sidenote: for anyone who has bought the MK7 GTI in the last couple years, what did you pay?

There are a lot of rough GTI's out there but there are also a lot of loved used ones to choose from.
In that price range I'd be making a list of musts for the spec (manual / dsg , leather / cloth etc...) and then filter out the cars that don't have what you want. Once you've done this you can work through the remaining cars and chose your mileage limit to filter them down further.
There are so many Golfs around there really is no need to settle for an average one.
I love the R, have had my Mk 7.5 for 3 and a half years now and was lucky enough to get it used when it was six months old. I did previously own a Mk5 GTi though and would have no issue going for the GTi over an R. The AWD and extra power is a bonus but the extra weight does take away that little something in the slower corners.
Also in the market for a GTI, around £20k. So far not impressed, one car i enquired about the salesman informed me they were replacing the clutch after 27k miles, so I assume it’s been ragged to death and therefore what else is about to go bang. Another car hasn’t been serviced for 18 months, general standard of cars isn’t the great. Been keeping an eye on prices for a year and they haven’t went down, which is the market, still mental
