TAX - a bit random, but i have a question.....

Im hoping one of you guys can help - my mum in the USA is sending me over an Ipod for my bday but i dont want to pay the Import tax, any ideas on how i can avoid forking out £60 when it arrives?

Agreed, she will have to fill out a Customs type declaration when she ships it.

Get her to mark it as computer parts not a gift cause otherwise customs will still charge you for it. if it's marked as parts then there's some sort of loophole that stops customs from even opening it.

Handy to know the next time I don't want customs opening my home bomb making kit.

I am fairly sure that cannot be a true thing, but a gift should be fine - but be aware, if it getslost you have NO come back at all. Declaring the value of goods (and paying the duty) will also mean you (or your Mum) are able to claim should it get lost/broken in transit.

True, one of the blokes in work was getting stuff from the US regularly and he allways had it marked like that but that was about 6 months ago so, fair one.

Yeah, lots has changed in recent times.

A year or 2 ago, I got a cowboy hat (don't ask!) from Sheplers in the states. The hat was not cheap, but then I got the letter from C&E...for almost the same cost as the hat! Made me kinda resent the hat a bit.

Not good - should worship the hat. Oh yes.

If you don't sign for the delivery (ie royal mail standard), then how do they know you've actually received it?

Didn't half get some funny looks on the plane but Customs ignored me.

My understandingh is that goods sent for repair under warranty are exempt customs duties. Erm.:wink:
