I may have to do one 30 mile drive in a car which has no insurance.

What is the cheapest way I'm going to be able to do it? Is it 'one day' insurance or is there an alternative?

Last time I needed insurance for a single day on a loan car I rang my existing insurer and added it for a massive £10.

That sounds like a potentially useful suggestion actually. I'll try that.

Churchill and many other insurance groups allow you to add a temporary car for up to x days.

The RAC (and others) offer temporary comprehensive insurance ranging from one hour to thirty days. I've used them before and paid around twenty quid.
Obviously the amount charged will depend entirely on your personal details and the type of car being covered. Many high value/high performance cars will be excluded from the scheme.

I used https://www.tempcover.com/ a couple of weeks ago for a Porsche 997 4s, initially 3 weeks then a week extension, a day was about £47 IIRC.

I should add, I tried my own insurer, and a few “specialists” had a few bizarre questions about my previous experience of “driving such a car sir”

I know my insurer said they won't touch me if I wanted to move from my FWD hot hatch to a powerful RWD coupe. I don't think it's that uncommon.

My current car is a 5.0 v8 and I'm potentially having to drive a 1.8 4-cylinder so should be okay from that point of view.

I had the same question 20 plus years ago, when I moved from a Mondeo to an Impreza. I think it’s been around for longer than that and is based purely on the metrics of people who smash performance cars as they are unprepared for the performance.

In answer to the OP I paid about £30 for the day five years ago, when collecting a present for one of my sons. It was cheaper than the additional admin cost from my insurer.

I used cuvva for 6 hrs insurance on an Alfa GT last summer that I was collecting. 6 hrs fully comp for less than £10, which got me home. Hefty excess though. Big difference in price (obviously) if you want cover on a weekday evening. Weekends are much cheaper. smile

But they won't do it on a car over 20 years old. frown

I used the same when i collected my Disco4. 3 hours cover booked for a 90 minute journey. Locked it in the garage at home for 2 days to wait for the next month as i was too tight to give it to the Gov. hehe

Yeah, cuvva will do it for £10.47 for the hour... that's not bad.

I’m a 47 year old professional, 0 points and previously owned M cars and other Porsches living in rural low risk area! I did have a laugh with the broker, as I appreciate it’s maybe not an attractive insurance prospect, some bloke borrowing a mates Porsche. Anyway it was an insurer recommendation based on it being such an easy experience, especially compared to what had happened on the prior conversations! Not affiliated etc. Just trying to save some time for OP.

I found Veygo to be the cheapest of the 0-30 day specialists - did quite a few online quotes (there were quite a few I found from a web search.

Depends on the car/risk I guess but I have used Cuvva for getting my car to the garage whilst it had no policy against it.

Cost me £24 for the hour but comes down if you insure for longer. Great app though and very handy.

You can effectively get 14 days' insurance for £25 or so by taking advantage of the cooling off period. You just have to pay a full premium and get it refunded.

The Admiral group of insurers admin fee for a cancellation within 14 days is (or was) £25, and that's all you pay, (once they've refunded the rest of your premium). Haven't looked for a while so it may have gone up.

After 13 days, just tell them you've decided to sorn the car and they don't ask any more questions.

I've used RAC temporary insurance on several occasions and whilst perhaps not the cheapest, I got irritated trying to get the Cuvva site / app to do what I wanted without lots of irritations. RAC site is pretty painless and I tell myself they're at least fairy safe in that sense. Think it usually works out around £25 to £30 for 24hrs depending on the car in question.
