Anyone had problems when fitting Magnecour Leads.

Had mine on 4.2 Cerb since may this year and it seems that they tend to "Arc over" creating a misfire on the o/s bank.

I have heard contrasting reports on Magnecour and would greatly appreciate any input... ie should i go back to standard TVR leads?

nope, had both blue and red and they've been fine.

maybe you should try reds (10mm race spec)

i have a Crane Hi 6 ignition system with HUGE multiple sparks, and they can handle that.

maybe you got a duff set. i'm sure they'd take 'em back and test them.

or could be heat perishing the rubber etc. is the routing ok? are you using the supplied seperators?

something must have happened to them to degrade them, or they're faulty.

did you get them from Tim (ACT) he'll get them checked for you. he's top on Cerbies now too.

I did indeed Ash.

This is now the 4th faulty set of magnecors .. Phil I used to get them from ACT before i closed my account with them. But they do have a TEN year manufacturers guarantee so I suggest you contact ACT and demand your right to use it!!

If anyone else is having misfiring problems on their cars and have fitted magnecor leads i strongly advise you to look at them as the first step in diagnosing the problem .. there's far too many of these faulty sets floating around, if i've had 4 sets faulty then there's quite likely hundreds of faulty sets that have been sold in total throughout all the tvr network.

ACT is the main tvr distributor for the leads so i suggest you contact them and either get the goods exchanged/repaired (your statutory right) or a refund (not your right, but you may feel you dont trust them enough to want to put them back on your car ..)

I have since moved on to an alternative supplier for my leads and so far so good

With regard to the “faulty batch” of Magnecor leads, i have received no information from customers trade or retail to support this, no lead sets have been returned due to being faulty.
The complaint procedure couldn't be easier,Within the Magnecor lead box you would see an information sheet which states very clearly that you should contact Magnecor in the event of a problem and gives phone number and email address, you would be speaking to Phil the managing director and these issues would be taken very seriously.

Tim,

Mine failed outta the box, Magnecore dealt with the problem efficiently and replacements were sent out, different batch and same problem again.

Refunded my money and i moved on, a lot of people swear by them, i just swore at them...

as the complaints proceedure is so well documented i went down that route, why would i waste 10p ringing you just to be told to go back to the Mfr

Our Griff has not run well before the leads and also after (rebuild in between) so after numerous trips back to Power the leads were replaced (back to standard) as well as other bits. Is running better and the leads were blamed as the cause. Told I would need to upgrade dizzy and coil before fitting Magnecore leads. I guess I need someone with an OK car to try them before I embarrass myself by contacting Magnecore (will attempt to do at the Growl).

Hmmm. So this wouldn't be trying to undermine confidence in the market leader to boost sales of your own new-kid-on-the-block brand then, especially since nobody will now supply you with Magnecor leads?

Frankly I was quite appalled when I read this. I have been using Magnecor leads for around ten years now, and have seen and monitored literally thousands of them on the dyno. In all that time, I have only ever seen one defective lead which was replaced immediately by Magnecor.

There is no intrinsic problem with the leads, unless you have a faulty one. Magnecor are the only leads that work for my customers who run their engines underwater (in off-roaders - and yes I've got the pictures to prove it). So no arguments there then. They are also the only leads I have tested that tolerate the higher HT voltages associated with LPG on a long-term basis.

Every set of Magnecor leads contains detailed instructions, and on the reverse is a large notice that reads as follows:

"To help us improve our product we would like to know if you are not happy with some aspect of the lead set you have purchased, such as incorrect lead lengths, fittings, etc.

If there is a problem it is best not to fit them, contact us and we will solve and rectify the problem."

This information is followed with telephone numbers and an e-mail address.

Every incident is always investigated personally by Phil deWitt, the MD of Magnecor Europe Ltd. So Jools, what did they say to you when you returned your four faulty sets? It must have been quite damning for you to extrapolate that to several hundred defective lead sets in circulation.

Cooky - have you seen the leads arcing out? If so is it between two adjacent leads, or between one lead and the block/coolant pipe/etc.? Does it happen all the time, or only on load?

There is one other scenario to watch out for, which is tracking between the towers of the coils. It is quite common for the condition of the towers to deteriorate to the point where they must be replaced.

If the last leads allowed tracking underneath the boots on the towers, then fitting new leads will not stop it. For every time that a spark manages to track out, it lays down a track of carbon which makes it's job easier next time. In the early stages, this is very hard to see. Once the track is established, it can only be cured by fitting a new coil.

Do you mean coil, and/or dizzy cap?

Yes - I was surprised by this.

I have magnecor leads - the coil lead was too long (by 4 inches) even with the longest and best routing.

ACT delt with this very quickly with Magnecor..

I do not see where you get off slagging off your competitors.

About 3 months ago - Jools would have been on my prefered list of places to get work done but WTF would I or anyone else want to give work to someone who wants to build himself up by putting others down.

Jools - grow up.

This is the real world and not a playground.

It's really anywhere a boot goes over a tower. On a Cerbie this is coil packs, whereas on an RV8 it's the coil or the dizzy cap.

I think the phrase is discretion is the better part of valor... also fits in nicely with Ted's "no name and shame" policy I feel.

Mark : my supply of magnecors isn't cut off, magnecor will supply no problem, I choose not to use them.

I choose to supply an alternative now, about which i know of no known problems.

Nice healthy debate.

I have Magnecor, from ACT and they are fantastic. The car is on song and power is back.

I replaced the coil and the dizzie cap because, as Mark states, if one bit is breaking down it effects the rest of the system so as to cause this to breakdown.

The reason I chose Magnecor leads is exaclty that they are the market leader and have huge knowledge and experiences. I don't.
