Cheap Impreza WRX
Discussion
If you do decide to go for an older shape the P1's are starting to come down to sensible money.
In my opinon I would steer well clear of the imported vehicles. A good friend of mine has just spend 5k repairing the engine on his 3-door Impreza Type R version 5. It went bang at 29,000 miles!!
Apparently there are a few commen problems with there fueling and a small percentage suffer from a notchy gearbox.
I know the P1 may not be as fast, or as cheap for that matter. But apart from the warranty. If your going to use the car as your primary transport this winter it is worth noting that the jap cars don't leave the factory with any underseal.
Just some food for thought

No, trust me, the P1 is the fastest standard UK car Subaru have imported. I went out in the Prodrive performance kitted out WRX STI around Knockhill, and it was still slower than my almost-standard P1 (I have the Prodrive big brake option). Even the 22B (which looks the best IMHO) isn't as good on real roads due to it's frenetic gearing.

While on paper the new WRX STI Prodrive performance-pack has better power figures, in reality rolling roads have shown that the P1 runs more power - a standard one has shown 320BHP at the flywheel (quoted figure of 276)
The new one does have better brakes though as standard & better turn-in (both of which are easily sorted)

What you really want is the one with the 'ugly' lights, because it is cheaper and I actually prefer it. You can get WRC conversions anyway. However, what you want is the STI RA 'Race Altered', much much lighter, diff lock, intercooler water spray, blueprinted engine etc etc. It is the one they sell to be made into a rally car
. Has no poncy bits like air con, but why do you need air con when you've got a roof vent!
Tuffer - That is taking the pi55, I got offered £8.5k on my Golf GTTDi (S plate, 42k miles) against a used Passat TDi130 a few weeks back at Testwoods in Southampton.
Scooby dealers do seem to live on a different planet. About 18 months ago I was looking to px my Merc E320 against an Impeza turbo. Offered me £9k. I sold it private for £12.5k and went for an Accord Type R instead.

Yes indeed; now appearing at well under £20k - several grand under, in fact.
The only car - bar a 22B or RB5 - that I'd look at from the Imprezza stable as an alt to the EVO V, VI or VII and because of it's slightly more compliant ride, the dentist's pref too.
Remember EVO's COTY 2000? The P1 was 3rd, I recall, behind the mighty Diablo 6.0 and all-conquering 996TT - not bad for what was a £30k 4 seater!
Indeed, during the testing, one of the reviewers said that really, honestly, the P1 would be the only thing to properly live with the Porsche...
Add that lovely boxer engine into the equation and forget the ubiquity that often unjustly blights the credibility of these incredible cars and, well, you have a cast iron winner!
(Must say, the proliferation of Imprezza models confuses the hell outta me.)
So buy the damn thing and talk to some reputable tweakers - you CAN get sub 4 secs for the 0-60 dash from these babies if you properly liberate 300+ bhp. [Mind you, do they have a bigger petrol tank than the paltry efforts in the EVOs?]
Why get excited about the low dealer price when its still way above the car supermarket (ie import price )all for one years extra warranty !
I should wait a couple of months and get an even better price for an old model or get the latest spec from an import or supermarket 03 car .
like you found out Scoob dealers just take the pi** with trade ins so you have got to sell private anyway.
But whatever you do you must own an Impreza one day, before the govt bans driving pleasure for good. they are not perfect put they make YOU feel perfect.
