Lunch near Chipping Norton
Discussion
Taking my niece and daughter for lunch this weekend, in or near Chippy. Any recommendations? I
Not looking for fine dining, just something a bit nicer and with a bit more atmosphere than the pretty average pubs in the town centre which are all I know.
Happy to drive ca 10miles in any direction but heading back to London after so don't want to go much further than that, esp not to the west.
Thanks!

The Boxing Hare at Swerford. We have been here a few times and the food is great in a relaxed environment.

Right, you’re spoilt for choice but here are the best we’ve found over the last 10 years and we would go to in the blink of an eye:
Falkland Arms - Great Tew
The Fox - Oddington
The George - Shipston
The Wild Rabbit (If you want to bump into Clarkson)
Red Lion - Long Compton
All are excellent, the Wild Rabbit is not cheap and has a wow factor, the Falkland Arms is old skool and if you get a table in the bar it’s a fantastic atmosphere. The others are all smart and ALL have excellent food.
In Chippy there’s ONLY the Blue Boar I would recommend, the others are high risk disappointment and the Crown & Cushion is frankly a unmodernised 1980’s nightmare.

I know you've all been salivating in anticipation of the big reveal, so here it is.
We ended up in a place called Quince and Clover in Great Tew. More or less next door to the Falkland Arms and only 10mins from Chippy.
More of a deli/cafe that I prob wouldn't have chosen myself, but niece and daughter both wanted to try it.
It was pretty good. Lovely spot - we sat on a bench out front - and the food was excellent. Menu slightly limited and a wee bit hipster, but pulled pork sandwich was great and the trimmings - pickles and slaw etc - homemade rather than out of a jar and thus not overly sweet and salty as they uually are.
Patatas Bravas style hash my D had was also pretty good, nicely spicy and with a perfectly poached egg on top.
Not so much choice of drinks and no licence, but I was driving...
Famous for its ice cream apparently, D had one, it was good but not exceptionally so.
Not a blow out lunch by any means either, a V modest 70 quid for the three of us. Great value these days.
Seating limited but you can sit on the green and eat if they have run out of space.
Will def be trying out some of the PH massives' tips in future, tks all.

We lived in Great Wolford for about 10 years... heard loads of dodgy stories about The Fox and Hounds since. What's it like these days? Any Gos?
Four of us had a burger type lunch there - it was nothing to write home about and the atmosphere was dire so pointless going there when there’s so many other places mikes better. I think it takes the overflow when people are desperate. The only place we haven’t eaten in is the Crown & Cushion. We tried and a miserable girl led us to our table in the restaurant which was completely empty with only our table laid, at 7pm on a Saturday and the room looked like it was 1980 again all you need is a Basil.
Whistlers was our go-to place until it became £80+ a head, trying to be fine dining in a cafe with a waitress in a t shirt. We tried it twice and aren’t going back it’s s piss take.
All the other places are great though!

Seen it, never been there but I’ll give it a try. More a tea shop/cafe so you pulled a flanker there! Nice.
Yes not quite what I asked you all for, sorry about that!Well worth a visit, especially on a sunny day. If you fancy a beer, there's always the pub next door...
