Collecting our new car this weekend and insurance quotes seem to have gone silly!

32 (nearly 33), 8 years NBC, no claims/convictions, wife on the policy (35, no claims or anything), CR2 postcode on a new X5 45e (all standard, not many options, no modifications)

Best I’ve managed through a comparison is £1,200 but that’s a black box policy (nope! Wouldn’t touch one) or £1,490 with admiral (but strangely £2.4K direct). Most I’ve ever paid was £1k and I’ve had a variety of interesting things, often at a young age.

Before I pinch my nose and take the £1.5k admiral quote does anybody have a recommendation for somebody I may have overlooked?

Tried:

Peter Best - +£4k
Flux - £3.6k
A-plan - £3.3k (but diverted to HNW team, call tomorrow)
Direct Line, NFU, Aviva etc won’t quote at all.

Have you tried same details different postcode, just for comparison?

That seems rather steep, I could insure my RR, AMV8 and 166 for less than that with the same age / ncb.

Just renewed with 1st central, via comparison site.

Have you tried different comparison sites too?

Probably the theft factor is bumping it up.

Yes - confused, compare the market and Quidco compare (latter the cheapest)

Little miffed as my lotus Exige was only £215 last year... not tried changing postcode as there isn't much I can do (beyond moving house again) tbh

It will be the amount of them that go missing without the owner's consent, fundamentally.

I am not surprised that some insurers are being more csutiousand picky over certain cars now.

Might be worth giving First Point a call, they sorted my AM out.

You mention not wanting to move house again. Did you recently move on top of buying new car? Is the new house a new estate / new build?

Only ask as when I first moved into my current address the insurers I was with was fine for the remainder of the policy, but come renewal time they were so highly priced I had to do a double take. Turns out the insurance company I was using used a bunch of algorithm software which did not have enough data in my postcode to analyse the risk.

This wasn't even a big move. It was same initial 2 letters and 2 numbers. Probably about 1.5 miles from my old address. I'd even consider it a much nicer and safer area too.

Have you tried getting quotes with a tracker?

Yes, moved September-21 so now a house (not a flat) but it was built in the late 1920's/early 1930's so should be plenty of data there - CR2 may not be as good as BR3 however

Yea, takes off ~£100 but the tracker cost will exceed this

It's definitely worth a few minutes changing a few of the variables on Confused (or whichever) to see if there is any one factor that is really driving the price up.

I appreciate it's largely irrelevant if it does turn out to be your postcode that is the problem, but at least you'll know.

I've lived on the border of three postcodes for years and there has been a fairly big percentage difference between all of them every time I've checked - and the most expensive one seems to switch often.

When the cheapest quote I could get increased dramatically one year, it turned out that the insurers had started assessing the risk of parking in my garage overnight as much higher than parking on the street outside.

In your case, it's almost certain to be the car that is the problem - brand new premium brand SUV are the key theft targets.

Try LV.com . This is my renewal "BMW X5 M50D AUTO Comprehensive 25 Aug 2022 to 24 Aug 2023 last year £407.59 this year £524.68"

I am old and my policy states no commuting and nothing has changed to justify the £120 increase ( car is a late 2020 model )

Slightly off topic, but prices are rising across the board due to the claim cost rises being seen.
Sabre insurance released their results this week and their loss ratio (claims cost vs premium taken) rose from c.50% to over 70% for H1 this year. Direct line also gave a profit warning for similar reasons.

That's the trouble. Insurance is so ridiculously cheap in the UK, that when someone gets a sensible quote, they think it's expensive.

I'm in a similar boat, paying £350 for a Mercedes GLC in West London 'burbs. Also old and retired. Friends of ours with a similar car in rural Germany pay €1200!!

No one should be able to insure an X5 M50D for £400, I don't care how low a risk they are. Or a GLC for £350. It's fking bonkers. I bet a new wing mirror for it is more than that.

I'm not sure that is the case.

I insured my BMW 330i for £241.56 in April 2021 with Saga but renewed this year for £206.58 - bargain!

I think CR2 from BR3 may well be a significant factor.

You worked in insurance so you’ll be aware that one case of premium dropping doesn’t necessarily reflect overall trend.

True, but on my sample of 2 I paid £345 for my other car in June 2021 but only £260.86 last month. smile

My 2015 BMW 528i is up for renewal next month, I paid £175 last year with Saga and have had a quote of £177 from the AA this year and several others below £200 on GoCompare. Still waiting to see what the Saga renewal is.

That is for 5k miles only though.

That is ridiculously cheap in my opinion.

As far as I know you get two weeks in which to cancel, so you can always try elsewhere to see if you can better.
