Hi all I am buying a car through a dealer (clients car being passed on) which has been imported to UK from isle of man but was originally a UK car. Does this go on the previous UK registration before it went out go Isle of man? also they have asked me to pay 6 months tax upfront and will register it in my name which I assume is to save time? I am getting finance on the car but as yet have no confirmation of the UK registration number so not sure how that will go down with the lender? Lastly I assume i no way to perform a hpi check just on a vin number? Anyone have experience of this? I don't want to pay out upfront until I have a clear hpi

There is no annual MOT in IOM, so ensure the car has a UK MOT pass. De-registration from IOM to UK requires filling in an IOM export form, and also applying to DVLA for new registration (whereupon it will receive an age related number). All this can take time to process. Talk to the dealer who will have to sort the admin. Perhaps a small holding deposit and only close the deal once the DVLA registration and road tax is all done.

I've left a deposit and am not in a rush for the car as it took me ages to find. However is there any import taxes to pay as isle of man is not part of UK?

No import taxes to pay, It’s all the same. However the Isle of Man has its own DVLA.
As your car was registered in the UK first then it will almost certainly revert back to its original UK plate. This has happened to me a few times. The most important thing is that the dealer you are buying if from has the relevant paperwork from the Isle of Man. For years we had to fill out an export certificate in the Isle of Man which then accompanied the car to the UK. However this changed a couple of years back and now all the export details are on the Isle of Man logbook and this should accompany the car. A word of warning, if you don’t have the Isle of Man logbook it can be a right bugger to get the UK DVLA fired up to do the transfer, it can take months!
Good luck.

Hi all thanks the dealer is saying they won't post the application until payment is made for the car? and that I can use it on isle of man plates until the New v5 comes through using also vin insurance? Does this all normal as he says I am fretting over nothing!! its a lot of money and I still don't have hpi as I guess that will have to be done on vin?

You can HPI, or car vertical or one of the others using the vin. Car vertical is good and does about 100 countries as part of the checks.
You can insure cars on the vin, often done with imports from Japan but check with your insurer as not all will work on this way.

The paying upfront is an interesting one, I guess it's because it's registering to you, but then we know reg keeper and owner aren't the same thing. Works similar with Japanese imports though, you pay before you get it

I have a car and bike which I keep in the IOM, which I exported from my home in England. My insurance is normal U.K. covers IOM and I’ve declared the garaging address as IOM with Manx registrations on both vehicles. So I see no reason why you cannot do the same, until you have the U.K. registration confirmed, just declare the garaging address as your U.K. home address. It’ll need to be taxed though which could be the sticking point as it’ll need to be Manx registered in your name with insurance and you need to go to an IOM post office to get the tax disc!

There’s a 12m limit for keeping a U.K. registered car on the IOM, before it needs a vehicle inspection test and a Manx registration, I don’t know if the same time period applies when going the other way.
