Due to a number of reasons, I am looking for a better ride.
What car have you owned that is really, really comfortable? Something smooth and easy to do a long journey in.
Age, size or MPG doesn't matter.

I've never driven anything long-distance that has been more comfortable than a Volvo. It's not so much the ride-quality as the seats themselves.

Both the ancient P-Reg 850 2.5 that I drove to the French Alps in around 2010, and the courtesy XC70 D5 I had in around 2014. The seats in both were just great, and I never ended a journey with an ache or pain anywhere.

The same cannot be said about the BMWs, Audis and VWs we've had over the last 10 or so years.

My first thought was a Volvo of some description.

My Lexus LS460 is probably the most comfortable car I've been in. Set the air suspension to comfort and it's lovely. Seats are wonderful too. I'm pretty sure a new Merc or Rolls Royce with the air suspension that has cameras to scan the road for potholes would beat it though!

Citroen C6 for me, of all the cars I have previously owned, it was by far and away the most cosseting.

More than likely not the most comfy car out there but the best I’ve driven, the current Citroen c4, after having a s line Audi, the ride is nothing short of amazing, no bump seems to unsettle it and it’s just always so smooth, seats are memory foam too apparently.

Nice car.

Volvo v90 on smallest wheels
Citroen Berlingo on smallest wheels
Range Rover sport on smallest wheels

Can you spot a trend?

Volvo best of all three, mix in ultra comfortable seats and semi autonomous tech as standard and it munches miles.

The latest generation of Range Rover seems to be getting praise for its ride quality.

W222 S63 mercedes with ‘magic body control’

seats are better than anything else mentioned, rolls royce, bentley, 7 series, S8, Volvo, Lexus, been in them all and they all fall short of the merc, an incredible car, if you dont want to be a taxi get the coupe version smile

The air suspension and seats on my Discovery, running 19" wheels (original fitment, but 1" larger than smallest) and squishy AT tyres produces a frankly phenomenal ride. Potholes and ruts that make my Volvo (also a very comfortable car) shudder are barely noticeable in the Discovery.

Zero sporting pretentions (unlike the sibling Range Rover Sport with its active ARB setup), and all the focus on ride quality. It must be up there.

As the question was about ride, I’d wager the entry level with a lighter engine, smaller alloys and bigger sidewalls will be significantly better again than an s63.

Mk1 Citroen C5. I had two and fitted brand new Michelin and Pirelli tyres to them.

I had the car briefly with me as a uni student and one evening had a flatmate in the passenger seat. The seats were velour and both front seats had their own arm rests. He marvelled "it's like driving around in a giant armchair".

My thoughts too.

I think you'd have to step up to a RR to do better.

SAAB 9-3's were always good, until you hit a pothole and it all went wrong, good seats though and very good on smooth motorways.

Far, far better in that respect that the later ones I've had.

More recently

His time spent with the “completely faultless” V90 Cross Country though, has, it seems, made him reconsider his opinion. What really impressed him though was the quietness, comfort and common sense with “knobs you can adjust while wearing gloves, sensible phone charging and a London taxi turning circle.”
