Asterisks

Why is it, on my screen at least, certain posts show asterisks to *emphasise* words? Is it intentional, or a quirk of a particular device or browser? Just curious.

...or is just that some posters will add them rather than use bold or italics?

It'll mostly be people who are used to WhatsApp. *Emphasising* a word with asterixes in WhatsApp would show it in bold. Likewise, _this_ would come up in italics.

Just for completeness, ~this squiggle thing~ would come up crossed out.
