Hey All

In short, we spend about 25k a year on our credit card, this is because we use it for everything. The main reason originally for this is just because if the account was to ever be the victim of fraud, it is much easier to resolve with a Credit Card than if someone steals money out of your bank!

We clear the balance every month so there is never any interest or debt.

At this level of spending, what would be the best Credit Card to use for rewards/cash back etc? Currently on an MBNA platinum.

Thanks

Maybe Barclaycard Rewards or Amex Gold - not sure either I would describe as " good " but ignore the spend itself and the M and S vouchers my wife tends to go for as reward do add up !

I suppose it depends on what, if any, "rewards" you want, and how much of a yearly fee, if any, you are willing to pay.

I have a BA Amex card for main use so that I can collect BA Avios etc for future flights with wife, works well for us. Being retired and therefore flexible on dates helps with getting seats.

Had the Amex card since 1980.

I've got a Barclaycard Cashback card that's currently giving 0.5% cashback on all spending. This is much simpler for me to understand than something that gives you points with some random intermediate exchange rates against things you may or may not want to buy. I'm not sure this card is still available for new customers, but they seem to do a 0.25% one.

AMEX Gold.

Had 4 business class flights for free on Emirates for 2 people over the last 6 months from a 2-3 years expenditure and got another 160k points still to use.

If you refer your wife after 3 months so you both have one you'd get a load of referral points too, then just switch one of them to a free AMEX for the 2nd year so you're only paying £160 per annum on one card.

It's been well worth it with the shop small discounts, airport lounge passes, £10 off deliveroo a month etc.

I’ve had cashback credit cards for years but the rewards have been getting worse every year. The last good one was Tandem that stopped about 2 years ago, since then I’ve used a John Lewis card but that isn’t as good now as when I got it.

I’m currently using a Chase debit card as that gives 1% back but it’s not a credit card so I have to load the account if I’m about to make any big purchases.

Be aware that you may get a lower credit limit on your new card.

Forgot to add that with the BA Amex card you can get lots of additional Avios by buying through BA's Gate 365 online facility, assuming the company you are buying from participates. I've had some amazing deals on Avios in the past via this facility.

We have a Tesco card and put all spending on it.

We get around £200 a year in clubcard vouchers.

Whilst some of the deals aren’t as good as they used to be, got my sons xbox for free a few years back.

They still triple them up for some things. It cost us less than £10 to take to cars to Le Mans on the Chunnel and £7 for our next road trip.

We’ll still have £100 left for Christmas / New year shopping.

Just to set some expectations in case the OP is dreaming of 4 seats a year in Premium Economy, a £2k a month spend on Amex might just stretch to two off-peak economy seats in the first year if he takes advantage of the sign-up bonus and ongoing promotions.

I think your comment relates to UK-USA return. £2000pm will cover several seats to Europe.

Note that there is no facility until the first year is completed, as far as I understand things.

Likewise Tesco. Recent points on triple deals have been spent on Hotels.com for quick breaks down to the West country, National Express and Megabus to Heathrow airport and APH parking at Gatwick.

Same here, mine was originally a 'Goldfish' card.

The points go towards washing machines etc from Curry's.

I guess that with people being able to take card payments at low costs like 1.6% these days, we can't expect so much in cashback etc?
