As per the title, my odometer will clock up miles, but the Speedo needle does not move off zero

Any ideas anyone?

That points to a speedometer fault as the sensor runs both the odometer and speedometer.

Try thumping the top of the dash and look to see if the needle bounces when you do so. If it does not move then it is jammed.
I've just checked with the one I have in the garage and it moves with very little in the way of 'thump'.

Steve

PS did I mention I have a spare one (reads 77k ish).

Thanks. If it does not move with a thump on the dash indicating it is jammed is that repairable do you know?

When I put the car back together and tested the speedo by running it in 5th gear on my scissor lift it worked fine. Then taking it for an mot a few days ago I noticed it was not working, so a strange one.

Your spare could be of interest if I cannot get it working, can the odometers be altered do you know to bring it in line with my cars mileage do you know?

Should be fixable you just need to find someone who can do it. Hopefully not Speedy Cables who are a long way away from that.
Whoever can fix them will also be able to re-set odometer readings.

Does anyone know if it is possible to bench test the Speedo?

It looks like it's an ETB speedometer, they will still do some repairs on this model, they are at Southend on sea.

So I have had a look at the Speedo connections behind the Speedo.

I have three wires there. All connections look nice and clean.

Green - 12v ignition live - definitely seeing good voltage with ign on
Black - Earth. This is f8me as well
Blue/Yellow - this goes off into a little black box

Tapping on the Speedo makes the needle bounce a little bit.

So do we think the Speedo is faulty?

The black box is to tell the ECU if the car is moving.
If the odo is working then the signal has to be getting to the speedo so yes the speedo is broken.

I taxed the car today so took it out for a short run to see a mate tonight (4 miles each way) to just get a feel for it and let him have a look at the car.

On the way back I noticed the Speedo was working (it wasn’t working on the way there)!

Even better. indicates to me it is something minor rather than some sort of cluster F inside.
