Octavia/Insignia/Mondeo????

Hi. I've been looking now for a few weeks for a reliable bigger hatchback/estate diesel for my 70 mile around commute to work and family and dog. I've narrowed the search down a bit to Octavia/Insignia/Mondeo but any other suggestions or advice is very welcome before I make my decision. I've got a budget of £5000, maybe £6000 max. I just want something really reliable, low maintenance with good MPG

In order of preference, Mondeo, Insignia and Octavia,

In order of comfort Mondeo, Insignia and Octavia

In order of MPG Octavia, Mondeo and Insigna

In order of running cost, i'd say overall the Mondeo and Insignia would be close. Octavia would (from a garages perspective) more expensive - cambelt schedules are much shorter, door locks fail, window regulators fail, suspension fails.

Mondeos if diesel can be fuel vapouriser and rear trailing arm bushes

Thanks for your advice. There seems to be loads of Insignias available but they seem to divide opinion. Maybe Mondeo is the best option. I've got a Toyota Avensis D4D estate at the moment. It has been very reliable but not getting great MPG .

I agree with the above the Mondeo is the better overall car.

With the Insignia you'll land a newer facelift car than the Mondeo & although it's not as good an overall car I'd still consider one.

The Octavia pretty much comes last on my list out of these three, the ride is the worst out of the three & the NVH is also the worst, they do seem to get better fuel economy but that wouldn't be enough for me.

Thsnks. There are some great options for me to look at there. I hadn't considered the DS5 or Laguna but they could be worth looking at. I have a mate in work who loves Insignias but also another mate who had loads of problems so has put me off!!

What your losing in MPG you are gaining with reliability, what about a newer version of what you have ?

Yeah, I kind of fancied a change but I am starting to think that the reliability of a Toyota maybe difficult to replace.

I would say that the Octavia isn't the competitor for the other 2 - that would be the Superb... and it is (waaay more comfortable than my dad's Mondeo, for example and a bigger load area)

I guess comfort is subjective, i cannot stand the hard shapeless seats that are in Skodas

Could be worth looking at the Honda Accord Tourer. Nice looking car and reliable.

The thing is the Toyota diesels don't have the best reputation for reliability, it's one of the reasons Toyota stopped building them & bought their diesel engines from BMW.

I had multiple cars, my Mondeo has been the best reliability-wise. I have an 08 Titanium X. Had for a year now and apart from service bits nothing wrong with it. (Cambelt +4 tyres). It’s for sale too, had 136k miles. Half of your budget really. Let me know if you’re interested
