When the recession comes, they've had it

There's a few things I keep thinking of with our impending financial doom but the one that keeps popping into my head is the current fad of expensive detailers and ceramic coaters.
What seemed to start out maybe ten years ago as a man who came to clean the cars of rich blokes at their convenience now looks like the must have couple of grand "protection" on any new purchase.
I know a couple of trades who have recently been quoted £2K+ for a ceramic detail on their MS-RT transits and transporters
Another might be the explosion of foreign barbers and the weekly haircut for men (the shaggy styles of the 90s were a direct result of the early 90s recession) although I wonder the energy crisis etc will hit the young as much as the middle aged.

I am watching barbers with interest too. Rather like craft breweries (maybe another one to watch, I like beer but a brewery every 2 miles is prob too many) they have multiplied profusely in London suburbs over past 2-3 yrs.
My pet theory is that only half of them are legit and the rest are fronts for money laundering. Not sure whether the legit or fronting ones will be more likely to fail in the recession however...

This - the internet isn't going anywhere soon, neither are scammers or influencers. People just adapt and mould themselves to current trends, the one's that don't will just sink. A lot of them I think have just got lucky, something new will come along

Its bonkers where i live (Clevedon population 22,000 ish), there must be 20+ places i can buy a coffee and that doesn't include pubs. There is a new one coming soon with the grand announcement that there will be live music there.
Clevedon is recession proof with all those triple locked pensions!

I'm bald and cut what's left of mine myself, but I have to take my 8 year old son to barbers. It seems mental to me how long it now takes to cut a guys hair, and do you want a drink and a hot face towel etc. The young guys lap it up, when it all seems to be about creating an environment you can charge more for a short back and sides that they could knock out in 20 minutes if they got on with it What seemed to start out maybe ten years ago as a man who came to clean the cars of rich blokes at their convenience now looks like the must have couple of grand "protection" on any new purchase.

Yeah regarding the ceramic coating it'll be up to the detailers themselves whether they stick to their guns and continue to comprehensively screw the pooch or if they'll cut their cloth to suit the shrinking market. That detailer is however on the end of a supply chain which passes on its largess downwards step by step (the overpriced fit-out in the van, overpriced vinyl wrap on the van etc...) so some will go broke and their competitors will pick through the fire-sale remains to stave off fiscal Armageddon for a little while longer.What seemed to start out maybe ten years ago as a man who came to clean the cars of rich blokes at their convenience now looks like the must have couple of grand "protection" on any new purchase.

The last recession I remember here in Australia was in the early nineties and those who were, ahem, still part of the economy, had it pretty much continue as per normal..... The people who were in the direct line of fire from various belt-tightening interventions had it tough. A chunk of people who were working what could be described as cushy jobs (middle management, drifting along) who found themselves out of a job never worked again.

I believe the little spends do quite well in a recession, as people cut the big things first. It's not intuitive to most people how much the little things add up. They'll cut Netflix first, rather than realising that if they skipped 3 coffees they could keep Netflix (for example).You'd think it would be the other way round, people making daily sacrifices to keep the big holiday, but people who think like that won't be caught out by a recession and probably didn't waste too much on coffee in the first place (or could easily afford to, and still won't be affected by the recession).

You clearly know the town well. I shall be a part of the TLP club soon. 
Coffee shops : not that many around our area and virtually none along the Moray coast when we were on holiday a few weeks back. A few seaside towns with hardly even a shop!
Breweries: wish we had one within two miles or even a pub!
Distilleries: Whisky distilleries on the increase and old ones re opening. Gin distilleries: more opening every week.
Barbers & Hairdressers (male & female): there's quite a few in town with more opening every month but Nail Bars and the like too.

Central Leeds and amazed how many new restaurants, bars, coffee shops, nail bars etc are still opening week on week. Yet they all seem rammed.
I wonder how populated they will be this time next year.
Also cannot believe the amount of new apartments and office blocks being built now, mainly rent only rather than for sale. The last 12 months has seen an enormous amount of developments started near where I am. A development of 4 tall apartment blocks behind us, another 3 diagonally behind us, 1 new one in front of us and permission for 4 more. 2 new blocks started just down the road that we passed last night. In total there must be 20+ residential blocks under construction at present and a dozen or so commercial office blocks.
I cannot remember a time seeing the city having so many building projects on the go all at the same time. The timing seems very strange but what do I know.

Not all of them, no but not all are money laundering operations. The Far Eastern nail bars offer the same benefits, we’ll actually more as they operate as short term child care and respite for the prostitutes once they get knocked up.Who has weekly hair cuts? My wife does mine every 6 weeks 
i've obviously let myself go. I must admit i've been getting my wife to do it to cut down so i'm sure others will seek cheaper hair cuts too.
I think when it comes to detailing there will still be plenty of wealthy individuals wanting their pride and joy protected. If you're a reputable one man band detailer with a well off private client base, might well be fine. I think it'll see off the average person having anything done, along with trade vehicles like vans etc. Depends what % of your work they make up I guess. The vehicle wrap people might see a downturn as for many its a "nice to have".
I think luxury used watch websites/dealers are going to take a hit, not the actual authorised dealers I mean the likes of "watchfinder" with over inflated prices. Those that have heavily invested in watches at their peak I think are going to start to feel it as people who bought them when the times are good are probably going to re-prioritise.
