Cumin shortage?
Discussion
Hi all
I was hoping to make a batch of Magic Dust rub - I've got 10kg of pork shoulder to smoke for the weekend.
Neither Waitrose (Marlborough) nor Lidl (Devizes) have had any cumin for the last couple of weeks - I had to make a special trip into Swindon to go to one of the Asian supermarkets and they seemed low on stock.
Hardly a life-changing issue, just wondered if it was my bad luck or some wider issue.

Crappy weather (too wet) in India (biggest producer, biggest exporter) means cumin yields in 2022 are way down from 2021.
Then you add in mustard prices were high during cumin sowing time, and cumin prices have been dropping since 2018, so more farmers moved to that instead, and you've got a bit of a situation satisfying all your cumin needs.

I get my spices from these guys https://wiltonwholefoods.com/1808-wilton-wholefood...
Seems they have it in stock.

Yay. It's about thyme!Seems they have it in stock.
I'd LOVE a worldwide cumin shortage.
Hare the stuff.
Hate the overwhelming taste of cumin whenever you get a generic mexican/indian/cajun chicken style dish.
Ruins Jailhouse Chilli.
Hate it when you get a kebab and they've used it in their marinade.
Hate it when you get an Indian and they overused it.
Hate the way any jarred curry sauce is basically a Lloyd Grossman pasta sauce with cumin thrown in.

Might you just be hypersensitive to it? I know some people are for some spices (cardamon for me)
I don't think so. I can eat it, I just think it ruins everything.Probably because it's the 'lazy' spice that a supermarket will just throw in anything exotic to make it 'spiced' or 'cajun' or 'mexican' etc

I love it but can see it's one of those flavours which you can detect in anything if you don't like it.
Interestingly, the tiniest hint transforms an all-butter shortbread or crumble topping. Makes it even more 'buttery'.

Is it like coriander? To some it is soap, to others, wonderfully fragrant?I love it but can see it's one of those flavours which you can detect in anything if you don't like it.

Although there’s also mustard supply problems because of a poor harvest in Canada, the world’s grinding to a halt Then you add in mustard prices were high during cumin sowing time, and cumin prices have been dropping since 2018, so more farmers moved to that instead, and you've got a bit of a situation satisfying all your cumin needs.

To be fair, it's so widely used in authentic recipes from the Indian subcontinent that if you don't like it, you largely don't like that cuisine.Hare the stuff.

I can't taste it in most Kormas, or any of the milder, sweeter ones. I'll always go for Tandoori over Tikka for this reason. Both will contain cumin, but it's a prominent flavour in tikka
