Hi All,

Im finally looking for a step up from my Toyota GT86 and have got a few shortlist option i think getting some opinions on (maybe even from owners/previous owners) will help me make the right choice.
My Gt86 is amazing, so much fun for b roads and the occasional track toy, with a tad of drifting. however the lack of power means seems to be the missing piece of the puzzle to a perfect car.
I have these as options:

1. 2017 (NOT the final edition) Subaru WRX STI.
This car has a special place in my heart because as a child this was my favorite car (the older wrx sti's) and would be almost a car to tick off my buket list of owning while they can be reliably used and depended on. The shouty style is something i like and the power is enough to fit the bill. The tax although not ideal would be ok on this occasion because of the what owning the car would mean, as well as the fuel economy. This is not something i would like in any other car though. The interior is far from luxury from the price and am in 2 heads as whether its really worth it.

2. BMW M140i, This car on paper is almost everything i would need, enough power, rwd, and subtle but sporty looks. Ive owned a 2015 116d (facelift) so am familier with the interior ("a nice place to be").

3. I30 N, dont know too much about these however the fwd is slightly off putting

4. CTR, again same as the above.

Any Input would be great however, VAG are a no, just dont like them, seem like they have no personality

You mention that you want 'the missing piece of the puzzle', which sounds like you want a car which is just like your GT86, keeps all the things you like about that, just with the addition of more power.

However none of the four cars you mention are sports cars like the GT86 is, they're all family cars, taller/wider/heavier. So they won't feel the same to sit in or to drive as your car - you'll be trading off responsiveness and intimacy for power, practicality and a bit more luxury.

If you're happy to own a different type of car, then fine. However it won't be 'like a GT86 but with more power', it'll feel quite different and less good on B-roads or for a cheeky little slide.

If you want a car that's like the GT86 but with power, I'd say options are
- Turbo or supercharge your GT86. Simplest option and ensures you keep what you like.
- S2000 - a bit more go than a GT86, unsure if it'd be 'enough' to satisfy you. Older but pretty reliable and appreciating I think.
- RX-7 - yes they're old and high maintenance, but they're the same size and weight as a GT86, same FR layout, lower built, better weight distribution, double wishbones... and easily 300hp with light tuning, plenty of midrange too.

If you want a sports car with more power than a GT86 but doesn't have to be FR, look for a Boxster or Cayman. You could get a 981 for that or a 987.2, both come with the revised non-chocolate engines, plenty of power and great handling.

As said I’d maybe look to Turbo the GT86 if you love it.

From the list of options provided by OP I'd say it sounds like 4 seats are needed?

I loved my i30N and only sold because the clutch was heavy for the mrs' knackered knee and the offer was above what I'd bought the car brand new for 18months prior. Having the cars fully loaded as standard means that you're left with all the toys you could want for when it comes to more relaxed driving, N mode makes if a lot more fun and it sounds absolutely fantastic for a relatively small engine.

M140i I think is unlikely to feel that special if it's an interior you're already familiar with but perhaps that's just my mentality creeping in there, even if the power and sound would be a nice step up from your last 1 series.

With a little budget creep you could get yourself in to an F-Type - Not remotely like your current options but it's a beautiful place to be, RWD, sounds fantastic and can happily get a little tail-happy. Having said that, from your options I'd lean towards the WRX STI, purely from nostalgia.

What about an OG M2 - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202110188...

They are below £30k for the first time in a long time and are one hell of a car for the money. They have all the advantages of the M140i (bar the B58 engine but the N55 is arguably more pleasant) but they are a proper M car and a lot more special.

I loved my M135i, and in the 5 years I owned it it was reliable, fast and managed 40mpg on a motorway run but it struggled to put the power down and if you want to go drifting you will need to add a LSD and better suspension. PH did a series of articles on upgrading a M135i using Birds suspension, LSD and a tune and it completed the car, it's worth a read. If you want a coupe have a look at the M235i/M240i just use the same advice as above.

You should be able to get a gen 1 M2 for your budget and that will have the better suspension and LSD as standard.

If you do supercharge the GT86 budget for wider / better tyres the eco wheels and tyres they come with as standard will not be enough.

I had exactly the same conundrum and ended up with a shortlist pretty much exactly the same. My GT was getting long in the tooth so never considered power adders onto it. Quite frankly I dont trust that engine with forced induction (although Ive seen a lot of people run it successfully)

The tax and fuel bills put me off the Subaru, my brother had a 2010 and even on long motorway runs it never saw more than mid to high 20s. I liked the I30N theyre rare, which means expensive and my budget was a bit lower than yours.

I bought an M140i. Its all the car I'll ever need, coming from the GT it feels big, heavy and not all that exciting down a b road, so thats something to consider. Also without spending £xxxx on a LSD you arent really going to be able to do any drifting, its possible, but not particularly enjoyable.

There is plenty choice when it comes to a 140, as theyre relatively common, which means you can be a bit fussy with options. And there are lots of different options which could have been spec'd!

I've had mine about 6 weeks now and I'm loving it, on a motorway run to Wales from Scotland I got 41mpg, which for a 340hp car is quite incredible!

Slight budget creep, but a Yaris GR is a rocket and an absolute hoot, although the circuit pack is a must and may involve even more budget creep.

5.0 V8 Mustang won't be short on power

Infiniti G for something a little different?

As mentioned, 370 Z would be high on the list.

If you don't need 4 seats, consider a Cayman S. Or a Boxster S if dropping the roof appeals. You should be able to get something very nice with the budget you have.

One of the best handling cars you can buy, short of something like an Elise.

I agree with the above but with your budget OP it has to be the 370 Nismo, they're a cracking drivers car.

I'd say take a look at the M4 they have a good chassis & although they have a bit more go than you may have wanted but it's a very good fillet to the GT86:

If you're okay with forgoing some handling then the 3.0TT Q60 is a good leftfield:

This is the best car for OP's needs I reckon. Though it might be a case of 'be careful what you wish for' as some people find them too fast to enjoy properly on the roads!

I have to agree with this, where really can you enjoy and exploit the performance of one of these other than a track.
Id be scared witless to open it up for fear of putting it in a ditch.

The M2 is a great suggestion and definitely the closest in terms of progression to a more powerful GT86 type of car.

Out of the original list of options, it would be the M140i. Sure, it’s not the same type of car etc etc as the GT86 but I’m pretty certain that the 140 would drop the Toyota in any kind of circumstances.

I'm biased...but there is definitely fun to be had in both the 370Z and M4 I reckon.
