Ceramic Coating - Follow up care and when to repeat

Hi All

I've now (further to some great advice on this forum) been lucky enough to own a Lightning Silver DB9 Volante for 18 months or so. I had it detailed by Ti22 in Chepstow (thoroughly recommended - a great service including a full Gyeon ceramic coating) before putting it away for the winter at the end of last year. Having enjoyed it through this summer (washing it sparingly without doing a full polish) I'm wondering what I should do for its next "proper" clean.

Can I crack on and polish it myself (with e.g. my usual AutoGlym AquaWax (lazy bur easy)) or is this a very bad idea given the outlay on the relatively recent ceramic coating. Typically how often are you all getting this reapplied if you have it?

Shouldn’t really need to polish it surely?

If it’s had a ceramic job, you’d expect it was prepped? Polishing is just that, a polish. If it doesn’t need polishing then don’t do it as it’ll wear the ceramic. I’m not really a fan of hand polishing anyhow as from what I’ve seen more often than not the finish under light is pants. And rotary/DA most definitely will take the ceramic off.

Speak to the detailer who put the product on and see what he reckons. You can buy ceramic safe stuff.

As for how long ceramic lasts, well that depends on all sorts.. like care, the elements, what has been applied, how well it has been applied (the prep especially). Etc etc etc.

I do my Gtechniq coated cars with their spray detailer after washing which keeps the original coating looking good.

I'd top up the coatings every year for a dd with lots of miles or living outside. Every 2+ years for a garaged car with less use.

Google suggests many things, and there's tons of info out there, e.g.:

but always good to hear from individuals without a product to potentially market. I'll do some more digging on Gyeon products and find out what's best to wash the car, with a view to re-doing the coating in a few years (I garage the car and do circa 2k summer miles a year).

Ive had a couple of ceramic coated cars both gtechniq. Gtechniq have their own quick detailer/top up product. I tended to apply every 6 months on a daily driver car that had a fortnightly wash. I had it re-applied after 12-18 months.

You shouldn't be needing to "polish" (abrasive) anything unless you have washed it incorrectly and acquired new swirls. If anything you could apply a wax or sealant type of product to give it that "freshly detailed" look.

So easy to use, super shiny and beads like no tomorrow. I am currently getting full PPF with ceramic on top. I figured the hybrid ceramic would be perfect for maintenance and the installer confirmed that yes, it is ideal and plays very nicely.

Just wash it as usual and then give it a wipe over with a spray sealant. You could also give it a go with some iron remover and some tar remover too, but nothing abrasive.

Aqua Wax is not a polish and does not cut in so should be fine just like a detail spray top up

I use a meguiars detail spray on mine but not the hybrid one or the ultimate one.
I use the gold class one as it organic relying on carnuba where I believe the other 2 are more chemical derived.
However as your car is silver ( mine is black) either of the other 2 are probably going to give best results.
Dark paints are likely to get best results with the Gold Ckass detailer.
Personally the meguiars spray on my black paint is fabulous and really enriches the glossiness of ceramic coating.
I apply after every wash and it brings it out lovely. It's an extra 15 mins after cleaning to spray, wipe n buff.

I am a huge fan of the Meguiars products and have used them for years, often daily, but I really struggle with the ceramic detailer on my PPF and ceramic covered Aston. The two times I tried it, it seemed to take ages to buff off and get rid of the residue whereas on my Jag it comes off in a wipe or two.

I therefore use the Ultimate Quick detailer instead on the Aston if I want to do any touch-ups but generally it always seems to look shiny with PPF!

Interesting. I’ll report back if a similar thing happens to me with the wax product. Perhaps your use of the detailer product is conflicting with some other previously added product? I’ve seen that sort of thing happen before.
