Still a bit confused in this topic, but how much Nm do you need to work on suspension and brake component's on a large 4x4 vehicle?
(I.e my Jeep grand cherokee)

Most seem to jump from around 400Nm upto 900Nm, which may be overkill?

I did all this type of work by hand last time, swinging on breaker bars etc. Now in my old age I'm thinking some power assistance may be welcome biggrin

You need to measure the clearance behind the bolts/nuts, no point buying a 18000nm monster if it won't fit in the gap between the bolts and the chassis, etc.

Don't forget to add the length of the impact socket(s) on there too.

I bought an impact gun from machinemart wouldnt touch the wheel nuts.....returned it then bought DeWalt xr180.......flys through anything, its just 'big'......so not easy to get into tight suspension areas.

Mine is rated at 626Nm "maximum torque" and 544Nm "working torque" whatever that is meant to mean. It will shift properly torqued wheel nuts easily and also most other bolts I've come across but I have occasionally had to break out a long breaker bar because it wont shift things - most recently because a tyre place which had repaired one of my tyres had done the wheel nuts up with their impact wrench which was clearly more powerful than mine! As a rule of thumb, anything which mine wont shift, requires me to jump up and down on the end of a 1m breaker bar to have a hope of moving it.

Mine is an air powered one though and I'm not 100% sure my air lines can supply enough flow for it to run to its maximum potential.

As above though, you'll more often find that you can't get it onto the bolts around brakes than that the bolts are too tight for it to move. Even using a short extension bar significantly reduces the effective torque because the inate flexibility coupled to having two joints blunts the instantaneous torque of the "impact".

Can depend on condition etc, I have a couple... I ended up using both swapping out some bushes the other week in my mums XC90. Impact Wrench is good but sometimes you'll end up using a breaker bar and extension, once you start extending off a impact you are loosing some of its torque

Makita DTW190 -smaller and ligher, can get in tighter spaces, max breakaway think is 190nm, I'll start with that and If I get stuck I go to next

Makita DTW1002 - big old thing and claims breakaway of 1600nm but you can't get it in everywhere

The 700Nm Kielder is excellent in my experience, quite compact and reasonable weight with good quality at the price point.

For sir powered ones switch to high flow euro type quick connectors and a short wide bore type hose for max power
