Chatting informally to a client at the weekend about personal integrity. We're both relatively successful in business, both seen hard times in the early days, and both been in positions to benefit personally at someone else's expense but declined to do so.
I like to think of myself as being incorruptible, however I believe that desperate people do desperate things, and that pretty much everyone is corruptible at the right price.
What would be your price to be persuaded to do something unethical/immoral etc or even illegal?
Not judging. Just thought it could be an interesting discussion

My daughter has had to get the Police involved with an employee under her, who has also been sacked, for defrauding the company out of £1000.00, just why would someone put so much on the line for that relative small amount.
Someone I know went to prison (can't remember the length of time for defrauding the company he works for, to the tune of £10k, again prison for £10k just why would you do it and it wasn't as if he was doing it as he was skint, it just funded nice holidays and things!

Bit of a daft question because corruptible at one end of the scale is giving preferential treatment cost to a friend, up to the other end of the scale where th eresults of your actions could cause harm to people
You'd be much better off giving an example and then asking the question based on the example

When I worked for Securicor Cash Services, I was discussing this with one of our Security Inspectors. We both agreed that everyone has their price, and in our line of work we needed it to be very high.
That said, we have sacked Vault Officers for helping themselves to £50 of piund coins over a fortnight, to a Branch Manager who took the whole branch out for Christmas with the unallocated cash in the vault. Oh, and then there was a guy who abandoned his van in the middle of nowhere and disappeared with the contents, believed to have been about £3m in cash.

I'm a complete coward so no.............actually thinking about it, it depends who i was ripping off and for how much. It comes down to a risk/reward thing.
I used to work in Internal Audit so have a bit of a professional interest in fraud, bribery and corruption. Based on stories I heard from the Chief Internal Auditor it was a lot better in the old days where every Tom, Dick and Harry (especially in the Public Sector) had a side hustle going.

Personal experience, I think most people given the right circumstances would likely do so, especially so at someone else's expense which I believe is rife at higher levels.
Sitting with my elderly uncle in the 80s just yesterday kindly reminded me in his several decades in business never once had a trustworthy worker.
Me personally I wouldn't do it, would have to be in the millions to even be tempted but even then, unearned income goes the way it comes and isn't worth the misery of capitalising on someone else. Earned is more joyful, appreciated and respected.

Been offered cash and sex in the past. Declined.
Certainly at work over the years we’ve had staff who have accepted both. Always nuts someone throws away a well paid job etc for as little as a few grand.
Had a friend who owned a classic car business with a petrol station attached. His manager once stole the weekend takings: £10 k and fled. Obviously instantly caught. But why? 10k and so obviously her.

“They are telling this of Lord Beaverbrook and a visiting Yankee actress. In a game of hypothetical questions, Beaverbrook asked the lady: ‘Would you live with a stranger if he paid you one million pounds?’ She said she would. ‘And if he paid you five pounds?’ The irate lady fumed: ‘Five pounds. What do you think I am?’ Beaverbrook replied: ‘We’ve already established that. Now we are trying to determine the degree.”

Think I mentioned this before - we once had a Head of Assets and his deputy both sacked for taking bribes from Subcontractors. They got found out when they were both bribed separately by different Contractors for the same Tender. The losing bidder complained to the CEO that the winning bidder had bribed the Head of Assets, the winning bidder said that the loser only knew this because he'd been bribing the deputy. It was a massive can of worms. To top this off the Head of Assets had been having an affair with his PA (yes she was stunning.....) so he'd been getting some of the Repairs & Maintenance staff to do jobs for her family.....Certainly at work over the years we’ve had staff who have accepted both. The Deputy got sacked, the Dept Head ws suspended on full pay for 12 months and then reached a compromise agreement.
In a certain southern country I had dinner with the minister of finance and the president of a state owned company.
He insisted that we work through a third party and INCREASE the offer prices by 15%!
I was offered about £25k.
My job and peace of mind was worth more to me so I accepted the order but not the inducement.
At least my hands were "more or less" clean and I guaranteed work for the factory in a time of recession and layoffs.
We got the job. I told my boss and he answered, "I never heard what you said and don't tell anyone else.".
So I was party to corruption even if I didn't benefit. I didn't get a bonus.
Rip me apart if you like but I saved a few jobs in a time of recession as it was a very significant order that kept the plant running for about 3 months.

would be pretty easy in my industry to personally benefit but it would be for small beans (in the scheme of things) and not worth it in anyway shape or form.
There was an MD at Barrett Homes who was taking cash from subbies for awarding contracts - he got arrested in 2016 and the case is still being worked on.
