Mercedes GLC - decisions decisions

Hi all,

The time has come to purchase the first family wagon, gulp!

Have pretty much made my mind up on a Mercedes GLC premium plus, facelift shape so circa 69/70 plate. Now there is a fair few of these in the classifieds with a handful being added nearly everyday. These are currently priced between £40-43k.

A few questions on the exact spec, petrol or diesel? I’m happy with either, however I want something that isn’t going to tank in price because of the fuel it uses over the next few years (the hybrid models are out of budget unfortunately). And also, with the new shape coming out in September is now a good time to buy? I have until about October to pull the trigger.

Lastly, how to finance the car. I’m in quite a lucky position that cash/pcp (through finance specialist/bank loan are all readily available to me. I’m struggling to find that sweet spot that gives me the best monthly payment vs lowest deposit without having to fork out more than is necessary on interest payments.

There are no right or wrong answers, I would just very much appreciate some PH’ers opinions!

My BIL went from tiguan to glc and was amazed by how small the glc was inside even though its longer the tiguan. He and my sis (and 13yo neice hates the back) hate the car, think they have the 300?

IMHO ~2019 cars have their values most inflated by pandemic production shortfalls, and thus are most exposed to falling in value as supply soars and demand drops over the coming 6-12 months, regardless of powertrain.

I'd consider the possibilities of either buying new (from £43k) so at least it'd be a '22 car with no previous owners, or going a bit older for a pre-facelift model if you don't need the improvements.

I don't think Euro 6 diesels are particularly exposed.

Gut feeling, the longer you wait the better a deal you'll get, both as the new model is rolled out and as the supply/demand balance might shift. OTOH finance deals are likely to get worse over time as interest rates rise.

But could be wrong, it's a hard time to call the market.

On the space side, GLC is based on the C-class so longitudinal engine, it may have less space than the transverse engined GLB

Your budget will also get you a lightly used Lexus RX450h, it's where I'd be looking if you're struggling to decide between petrol and diesel.

The Lexus 10 year 100,000 mile warranty (as long as it's serviced by Lexus) would be an added bonus.

I'd say the GLC400d is the pick of the range a great drivetrain that suits the car, the hard part will be finding one:

We went from a Tiguan to a GLC. No regrets. The GLC feels bigger inside (don't know if it is or isn't) and although the Tiguan is a great car, the GLC feels like a massive step up in quality.

I was recently picked up in a GLB220d taxi. I am certain it had more space than a GLC. I wouldn't discount it.

Wife liked it, I thought it was awful - felt it was like a reverse Tardis - biggish outside, tiny inside - even the dug hated going in it.

Friends have a GLE, it's far superior in every aspect

Thanks all for replies. Some interesting other options here, didn't even know they did a 400d in the facelift

Regarding space wise there's only going to be 3 of us so I think the glc will suffice

We did 108k miles over 4.5 years in a 2017 GLC350d(3.0 V6) from new and we were really happy with it. I believe that they dropped the 350d model for the facelift though, and I also believe that the GLC400d wasn't offered to the UK either(although I have seen the odd one for sale but I'm guessing that they are imports?).

We now have a 2022 GLE400d and it is a lovely car, plenty of space plus 7 seats, and the engine is properly smooth for a diesel.

I also like that the GLE doesn't suffer from the crabbing issues that the GLC suffered with. You had to be careful on full lock at low speeds in car parks in the GLC, because the car would slide away from you without much warning.
